ME) <br /> <br />NO~ THEREFORE~ THE CHARLOTTESVILLE REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY <br />HEREBY WITHDRAWS ITS PETITION TO THE COUNCIL FOR SUPPORT OF THE RIDGE LANE SITE. <br /> <br /> AFTER CONSIDERABLE DISCUSSION~ A MOTION BY MR. MOUNT~ SECONDED BY MR. HAGGERTY~ <br />THAT THE COUNCIL ACCEPT THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE HOUSING AUTHORITY AS CONTAINED <br />IN THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION~ AND THE PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 12~ 1966 AT <br />THE COURTHOUSE BE CANCELLED~ WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br /> <br /> THIS A~TI. ON' DOES:'NOT' ME'AN THE END OF PUBLIC HOUSING IN CHARLOTTESVlLLE~ <br /> <br />NOR DOES IT MEAN THAT THE RIDGE STREET AREA HAS BEEN ABANDONED AS A POSSIBLE <br />SITE. THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE HOUSING FOR THOSE NOW LI-VI.NG <br />IN SUBSTANDARD HOUSING REMAINS. <br /> <br /> HOWEVER~ THE DIVERGENT OPINIONS ON HOW THIS RESPONSIBILITY SHOULD BE <br /> <br />MET MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE AT THIS TIME TO CARRY OUT A SUCCESSFUL AND MEANINGFUL <br />PUBLIC HOUSING PROJECT. <br /> <br /> THE PLIGHT OF THOSE HOPELESSLY CONDEMMED TO LIVE IN SLUM HOUSING WITHIN <br /> <br />OUR CITY IS DEPLORABLE. IN ADDITION TO THE HUMAN FACTOR~ WE MUST CONSIDER THE <br />BLIGHT THESE AREAS CREATE AND THE HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARDS THEY POSE TO OUR <br /> <br />ENTIRE POPULATION. PAYNE~ JR,~'PASTOR OF THE HEADOWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH~ GAVE THE <br /> <br />INVOCATION. <br /> <br /> THE MINUTES OF THE MEETINGS OF SEPTEMBER 6~ 1966 AND SEPTEMBER 8~ 1966 WERE READ <br /> <br />AND APPROVED. <br /> <br /> SGTo HOBART ADDINGTON ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL AND PRESENTED A BROCHURE OF THE <br /> <br />HONTICELLO GUARDIS TRIP TO THE CANADIAN NATIONAL EXPOSITION~AND~ALSO RETURNED ONE- <br /> <br />HALF OF THE APPROPRIATION WHICH WAS GIVEN THEM FOR EXPENSES FOR THE TRIP. <br /> <br /> HRo CARROLL Wo CORNELL ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL AND COMPLAINED THAT HERIDIAN STREET <br />ALONGSIDE HIS PROPERTY HAS NOT BEEN IMPROVED~ AND IS NOT BEING MAINTAINED BY THE CITY. <br />THE HAYOR REFERRED THIS MATTER TO THE STREET COHMITTEE FOR INVESTIGATION AND REPORT. <br /> <br /> DR. ~REDERICK BERRY AND HR. PRESTON COINER ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL AND PRESENTED <br /> <br />PETITIONS REQUESTING THAT SHAMROCK ROAD BE WIDENED. THE CITY MANAGER ADVISED THE <br /> <br />COUNCIL THAT HAD BEEN NEGOTIATING WITH THE PROPERTY OWNERS FOR ADDITIONAL STREET <br /> <br />RIGHT-OF-WAY BETWEEN THE RAILROAD AND JEFFERSON PARK AVENUE. AFTER A LENGTHY DISCUSSION~ <br /> <br />THIS HATTER WAS REFERRED TO THE STREET COMMITTEE FOR RECOMMENDATION. <br /> <br /> THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED TO MEET WITH THE TAXICAB OWNERS WITH REFERENCE TO A RATE <br /> <br />INCREASE RECOMMENDED THAT THE INCREASE BE GRANTED. AN ORDINANCE ENTITLED "AN ORDINANCE <br /> <br />AHENDING AND REENACTING SECTION 32,5 ENTITLED ~RATES TO BE CHARGED BY TAXIS; METERS; <br /> <br />FAILURE TO PAY FARE! OF CHAPTER 32 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE~ 1965" <br /> <br />WAS OFFERED BY HR. HOUNT~ SECONDED BY HR.
