CI'+Y OF CHARLOTTESVILLE HAVING ATTENDED THE PUBLIC <br />RESOLUTION RE: <br />MILK COMMISSION <br />CATION OF THE ALBEMARLE DAIRYMEN1S ASSOCIATION REQUESTING THE COMMISSION TO <br />HEARING HELD ON FEBRUARY 21, 1957 BY THE STATE MILK COMMISSION ON 7HE APPL1- <br />EXERCISE ITS POWER TO FIX MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM PRIf_ES FOR MILK IN THE CHAR- <br />LOTTESVILLE MARKET AND HAVING NOTED: <br />(1) THAT THE PROPONENTS OF THE EXERCISE OF SUCH AUTHORITY IN THEIR <br />TESTIMONY AND STATEMENTS DID NOT RELY UPON ANY FACTS INDICATING ANY ADVERSE <br />CHANGE IN THE CONDITION OF THE MILK INDUSTRY IN THIS MARKET OVER THOSE <br />EXISTING SINCE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COMMISSION IN 1934, DURING ALL OF <br />WHICH TIME THE CHARLOTTESVILLE MARKET HAS BEEN FREE FROM THE CONTROL OF THE <br />COMMISSIONS AND <br />l2! THAT THE ONLY EVIDENCE OF ANY POSSIBLE ADVERSE CHANGE IN THE <br />FUTURE GAME NOT FROM THE PROPONENTS OF THE SUGGESTION THAT THE COMMISSION <br />TAKE CONTROL BUT FROM A DISTRIBUTOR WHO OPPOSED THE PLAN AND WHO HAS VERY <br />RECENTLY COMMENCED SELLING MILK IN CHARLOTTESVILLE AT A SOMEWHAT LOWER <br />PRICE THAN MILK IS GENERALLY SOLD HERE, <br />AND THE COUNCIL BEING OF THE OPINION THAT SUCH PROSPECTIVE COMPETITION <br />t\ <br />X1'1 <br />Q <br />Q <br />FROM A NEW DISTRIBUTOR CANNOT YET HAVE BROUGHT ABOUT THE CONDITIONS WHICH <br />THE MILK CONTROL ACT WAS DESIGNED TO ALLEVIATE OR PREVENT AND VERY PROBABLY <br />WILL NEVER DO S0, THE COUNCIL HAS THEREFORE CONCLUDED THAT IT WILL NOT BE <br />IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST FOR THE COMMISSION TO EXERCISE ITS POWERS OF PRICE <br />FIXING IN THE CHARLOTTESVILLE MARKET AND THEREFORE, <br />RESOLVES THAT THE COUNCIL OPPOSES THE EXERCISE OF SUCH POl4ERS BY THE <br />MILK COMMISSION A7 THIS TIME AND URGES THE COMMISSION TO DECLINE TO EXERCISE <br />SUCH POWERS AND RESOLVES FURTHER THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION BE TRANS- <br />MITTED TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMISSION AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE ALBEMARLE <br />DAIRYMEN~S ASSOCIATION. <br />ON MOTION THE MEETING ADJOURNED. <br />CLERK <br />PRESIDENT <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - MARCH 4, 1957 <br />THE COUNCIL MET IN REGULAR SESSION ON THIS DATE WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS <br />PRESENT: MR. COLEMAN, MR. DAVIS~ MR. HILL, MR. MICHIE AND MR. WEINBERG. ABSENT: <br />NONE. <br />THE MINUTES OF THE MEETINGS OF FEBRUARY 18, 1957 AND FEBRUARY 25, 1957 WERE <br />READ AND APPROVED. <br />A GROUP OF GITIZENS APPEARED BEFORE THE COUNCIL AND REQUESTED THE COUNCIL <br />MATTER RE: COMMITTEE - <br />MILK COMMISSION <br />TO SEND REPRESENTATIVES TO ONE OF THE V. A. L. C. HEARINGS CONCERNING THE MILK <br />COMMISSION. ON MOTION BY MR. MICHIE SECONDED BY MR. HILLS THE MAYOR WAS REQUESTED <br />TO APPOINT A COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER WHAT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN AND REPORT TO <br />COUNCIL. THE MAYOR APPOINTED MR. MICHIE, MR. BATTLE ANO MR. BOWEN TO THIS COMMITTEE. <br />ON MOTION BY MR. MICHIE, SECONDED BY MR. HILL, THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION <br />WAS OFFERED AND CARRIED OVER TO THE NEXT MEETING FOR CONSIDERATION; <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE <br />RESOLUTION APPROP. <br />CARRIED OVER RE: <br />ATTORNEY S FEES - SCHOOL <br />SEGREGATION SUIT <br />WELFARE BUDGET APPROVED. <br />THAT $3,000.00 BE AND THE SAME IS HEREBY APPROPRIATED FOR THE CITY'S <br />SHARE OF ATTORNEYS FEES IN SCHOOL SEGREGATION SU-T. <br />THE PROPOSED BUDGET FOR THE OPERATION OF THE WELFARE DEPARTMENT FOR THE <br />FISCAL YEAR ENOtNG .JUNE 3O, 1955 IN THE AMOUNT OF $19O,Z11.
