<br /> 47 <br /> Mr. Lou Bograd, School Board member, said the regional market for teachers is <br />very competitive. He said City Schools are competitive the first 20 years of the scale, but <br />behind at the last 10 years of the scale. He said he shares Mr. Lynch’s sentiment about <br />the cost. He said he would like to have a regional discussion about salaries. <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati said the increases are not sustainable. He said to say it will be <br />studied for next year is not sufficient. He said we have got to look closely at it this year. <br /> <br /> Ms. Gronlund said the School Board agrees that one area they do not want to fall <br />behind on is teacher salaries. She said if the budget is cut, she would not support looking <br />at salaries. <br /> <br /> Ms. Muriel Wiggins, School Board member, said she thinks existing teachers can <br />be trained better. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said he thinks the School Board can make an argument for more <br />funding from Council. He said he would like to see some kind of focus on at risk kids, <br />especially the high school drop out rate. He said he feels it is in our self interest and <br />fiduciary responsibility to focus on dropouts since they are more likely to stay here than <br />high achievers. <br /> <br /> Ms. Van Yahres said we do not want to throw money at something until we know <br />what we need and whether we can absorb new programs. She said we should enhance <br />what we have first. Ms. Van Yahres said we should first get the new Superintendent on <br />board and finish the Strategic Plan. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown commended School staff for doing a good job. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch asked what 1% of the salary increase amounts to, and Mr. Gillaspie <br />said $200,000 for teacher salaries. <br /> <br /> The meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />_____________________________ ___________________________ <br />President Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
