2
Ms. Susan Oberman, 604 Grove Avenue, member of the Center for Peace and
Justice, asked Council to support the resolution opposing the two new reactors. She said
it is not clean energy, there is no way to dispose of the waste, and it is not economical.
She urged Council to put a stop to it here at home.

Ms. Elena Day, 151 Buckingham Circle, commended Council for supporting the
Climate Protection Agreement, and encouraged them to pass a resolution opposing the
nuclear reactors and supporting conservation instead. She said that DEQ will be holding
th
a public hearing on August 16 on water issues that will be impacted by the additional
nuclear power units.

Ms. Jennifer Conner, 1116 Little High Street, encouraged Council to support the
resolution opposing the nuclear reactors. She said clean energy sources and conservation
should be pursued to ensure a more sustainable future for Charlottesville.

Ms. Logan Blanco, 1200 E. Jefferson St., encouraged Council to oppose the plans
for the new nuclear reactions. She expressed concern about the safety and cleanliness of
the environment.

Ms. Betty Black, 125 Turtle Creek Road, representing the Piedmont Group of the
Sierra Club, asked Council to support the resolution opposing the nuclear reactors. She
said they pose a threat to the safety and health of Charlottesville. She asked people in the
audience to stand in support of the resolution, and many stood.

Mr. Richard Collins, 108 Wilson Court, expressed concern that the Route 250
Bypass interchange could be equal in its impacts as the Meadowcreek Parkway. He said
that the Federal Highway Act allows use of funds for other things such as park
enhancement, and he urged Council to ask for a legal review to look at the possibility of
using these funds.

Mr. David Blount, Legislative Liaison for the Thomas Jefferson Planning District
Commission, thanked Mr. Lynch for his hard work on the Commission. He said the goal
for this year’s legislative packet is to focus on a few priority items, and to get the packet
to the legislators earlier. He said a draft will be sent to Council in September, and it will
be on Council’s agenda in October for approval. He asked that Councilors get any items
for the packet to him in the coming weeks.

Mr. Lou Hart, 477 Fontaine Ave., said he is part of the Hispanic Group at Church
of the Incarnation. He asked for Council’s expression of support for the Senate
immigration bill. He said he believes immigrants are a plus to our economy.

Ms. Colette Hall, 101 Robertson Lane, said that extension of the technology zone
was discussed at Council’s last meeting, but was deferred. She said Council approves
new social programs and they need new business to support them. She said most
neighborhoods are not offended by technology businesses and they are clean businesses.

Mr. Peter Kleeman, 407 Hedge Street, congratulated Council for signing the
Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement.
