43'? <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - SEPTEMBER 6, 1960 <br />THE COUNCIL MET IN REGULAR SESSION ON THIS DATE WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS <br />PRESENT: MR. HAGGERTY, MR. LEE, MR. MICHIE, MR. MOUNT AND MR. SCRIBNER. ABSENT: NONE. <br />THE MINUTES OF THE MEETINGS OF AUGUST 15, 1960 AND SEPTEMBER 2, 1960 WERE READ <br />AND APPROVED. <br />MR, R. R. READY ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL ON BEHALF OF THE CONGRESS OF MOTOR HOTELS <br />AND REQUESTED SOME RELIEF FROM THE SIGN ORDINANCE FOR THE PROPOSED MOTEL ON HIGH <br />REQUEST RE: RELIEF STREET. nN MOTION BY MR. MICHIE, SECONDED BY MR. LEE, THIS MATTER WAS REFERRED TO <br />FROM SIGN ORDINANCE <br />THE PLANNING COMMISSION FOR RECOMMENDATION WITH THE REQUEST THAT, IF POSSIBLE, THIS <br />RECOMMENDATION BE MADE BY THE NEXT COUNCIL MEETING WHICH WILL BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER <br />26, 1960. <br />THE FOLLOWING REPORT OF THE STREET COMMITTEE WAS PRESENTED: <br />Aucusr 31, 1960 <br />TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL <br />CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA <br />GENTLEMEN: <br />STREET COMMITTEE REPORT RE: <br />PARKING ON DOWNTOWN MAIN ST, WITH REFERENCE TO THE REQUEST THAT A STUDY BE MADE TO DETERMINE <br />WHETHER OR NOT PARKING ON DOWNTOWN MAIN STREET SHOULD BE RESTRICTED <br />AT THIS TIME, WE RECOMMEND AS FOLLOWS: <br />WE DO NOT BELIEVE THAT ANY CHANGE IN PARKING IN THIS AREA SHOULD <br />BE MADE AT THE PRESENT TIME. HOWEVER, WE SUGGEST THAT AS SOON AS THE <br />OLD FIRE HOUSE IS REMOVED THAT AN OFF STREET PARKING LOT BE ESTABLISH- <br />ED AT THAT LOCATION AND THAT PARKING ON MAIN STREET BETWEN PRESTON <br />AVENUE AND 4TH STREET, N. W., BE RESTRICTED AT PEAK HOURS WHEN NEEDED, <br />IN THE JUDGMENT OF THE CITY MANAGER ANO THE CHIEF OF POLICE. <br />WE ALSO RECOMMEND THAT A TRAFFIC LIGHT BE INSTALLED AT THE CORNER <br />OF 3RD AND WATER STREETS. , <br />WE FULLY REALIZE THAT AT SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE PARKING WILL HAVE <br />TO BE RESTRICTED AT PEAK HOURS ON MANY OF THE CITY'S MAIN THOROUGH- <br />FARES BUT WE DO NOT BELIEVE SUCH ACTION IS NECESSARY ON MAIN STREET <br />BETWEEN 7TH STREET AND PRESTON AVENUE AT THIS TIME. <br />RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, <br />SOL B. THE MAYOR APPOINTED MR. LEE TO REPLACE MR.
