3 <br />taken a firmer stance against the Bush administration in the resolution regarding the <br />deployment of the Monticello National Guard instead of the language suggested by Mr. <br />Weber. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Pfaltz, 1503 Rugby Road, expressed concern about the proposed <br />Director of Customer Care and the cost to citizens. He said Council appears to be <br />determined to make the City unaffordable. He referred to the funds set aside to <br />supplement services provided by the Rescue Squad. <br /> <br />th <br /> Mr. John Gaines, 214 9 Street, N.W., expressed concern that parking has not <br />th <br />been eliminated at the West Main and 8 Street intersection as he was told it would be, <br />and asked if the City is reneging on that promise. He asked if the City has a contract with <br />Comcast, and if so, does anyone monitor the services they provide. <br /> <br /> Mr. Paul Long, 1410 Grady Avenue, commended Council for maintaining an <br />extensive transit system. He said the Transit Authority that has been discussed should be <br />more inclusive and all counties in the region should be invited to join now. He said <br />Council should also establish new bus routes and run all routes on Sundays and legal <br />holidays. <br /> <br /> Ms. Tatyanna Patton, 2209 Jefferson Park Avenue, representing the Rivanna <br />Conservation Society, said that water protection is needed and has merit. She said the <br />current program only allows the City to be reactive. She supported a fee based <br />mechanism to fund the program. She said that the Society does not endorse any specific <br />option at this time, but recommended that a dialogue be started with the public. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ernie Reed, 610 Farish Street, Director of the Living Education Center, <br />endorsed the water resource proposal, but said there needs to be a true comprehensive <br />analysis and wastewater infrastructure should be included in the proposal. Mr. Reed said <br />that there will be a public meeting regarding the water quality of Schenk’s Branch on <br />October 18. <br /> <br /> Mr. Downing Smith, 810 Locust Avenue, said he thought the YMCA idea was <br />dead. He said he understood that the City’s advisory committee recommended against <br />such a proposal. He said he has a hard time understanding what is happening on <br />Council’s agenda, and said it seems like Council is rushing the YMCA’s proposal to <br />locate in McIntire Park. <br /> <br /> Mr. Aaron Wunsch, 338 Monticello Avenue, representing Preservation Piedmont, <br />expressed concern about the proposal to demolish the Compton House at124 Maury <br />Avenue, and urged Council to support preservation of the building. He noted that the <br />Comprehensive Plan encourages preservation. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sandra Stamp, 104 Bollingwood Road, expressed concern about the YMCA <br />proposal and about having a future Boys and Girls Club pool replace Smith and Crow <br />pools. She said there are enormous benefits to swimming. She asked how many lap <br />lanes will be built, and asked that Council reconsider closing Smith and Crow. <br /> <br /> Ms Ann Page McClung, 3900 Page Brook Farm, Albemarle County, said she has <br />used City pools since 1976, and expressed concern about closing Smith and Crow pools. <br />She said if the pools are turned over to the YMCA many people will not be able to use <br />them. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dan Bluestone, 501 Park Hill, said that the Compton House is 94 years old <br />and is an important building. He said the lot is large enough that a building could be <br />added and the house kept with lots of land left. <br /> <br />COUNCIL RESPONSES TO MATTERS BY THE PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said that the issues of water protection and the YMCA will be talked <br />about during the meeting. He thanked members of the public for bringing up the issues <br />of our water supply. He said as we grow as a community we do not want to wipe out our <br /> <br />
