Public Transportation (3 Council Members) <br /> <br /> Develop a regional plan and/or restructure the city’s plan <br /> Revolutionize transit and promote a more bike and pedestrian-friendly city. <br /> Restructure transit system….expand transit <br /> Other issues identified by Council members, but not chosen as priority issues are <br />listed below in no particular order: <br /> <br /> Schools/Education <br /> <br /> Increase high school graduation rates. <br /> More college-bound students. <br /> Increase high school graduation rates for African American students. <br /> Keep pushing student success (Leads to life success) <br /> Early childhood education <br /> <br /> Citizen involvement <br /> <br /> Increase neighborhood association involvement <br /> Community involved to understand/react to budget/service choices. <br /> Improve/streamline customer service. <br /> <br /> Systems of Care <br /> <br /> Foster care prevention <br /> New way of thinking and service delivery for youth. <br /> Bring kids home <br /> <br /> Homelessness and Health Care <br /> <br /> Energy – Loans/grants for people with low and moderate income. <br /> <br /> Land banking for open space and housing <br /> <br /> The Council explored the question: In order to accomplish work on the stated <br />priorities, if something has to be reduced or eliminated, what will it be? After <br />brainstorming a pool of possible tradeoffs, the Council selected to explore the <br />following eight, not listed in any priority order. <br /> <br /> <br />1.Tradeoff : With regard to the school system, reduce the size of the school’s <br /> central office; explore ways to save money on state and federal compliance <br /> costs (e.g. testing, administration) through collaboration with Albemarle <br /> County schools. <br /> Action: Yes, this is in the works. It will require using the Council’s <br /> influence. <br /> <br /> <br />2.Tradeoff: Reduce or eliminate adult classes and programs in Parks and <br /> Recreation <br /> Action: A report is forthcoming from staff. <br /> <br /> 3. Tradeoff: Reduce or eliminate support of arts and culture. <br /> Action: Staff will prepare a report on where the money currently goes. <br /> Council may take a position of no support or low priority support for new <br /> <br />
