<br />COUNCIL CHAMBER – May 18, 2009 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: <br />Dr. Brown, Ms. Edwards, Mr. Huja, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. <br /> <br />ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> <br />th <br /> Mr. Norris said that Farmers in Meade Park will begin on June 10, summer pool <br />passes are on sale, and Council will hold a work session on the efficiency study on May <br />20. <br /> <br /> Ms. Edwards said last week was Bike Week, and she encouraged citizens to <br />engage in new exercises. She announced the end of year ceremony for Buford School. <br /> <br /> Mr. Huja added the action planning schedule to other business. <br /> <br /> Ms. Edwards said she will give an update of the Rivanna Water and Sewer <br />Authority meeting during other business. <br /> <br />TH <br />AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS <br />: VIRGINIA DISCOVERY MUSEUM 20 <br />ANNIVERSARY <br /> <br /> Mr. O’Connell said the City has once again been awarded AAA bond rating. <br /> <br /> Ms. Peppy Linden, Director of the Virginia Discovery Museum, said the Museum <br />th <br />is celebrating its 20 year. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br />th <br /> Mr. John Gaines, 214 9 Street, N.W., thanked Mr. Taliaferro for his involvement <br />th <br />in 10 and Page Street issues, for serving as a partner on Jefferson School, and for <br />recognizing the serious local drop-out rate of African-American students. <br /> <br />rd <br /> Ms. Dotty Cappellino, 103 3 Street, N.E. co-owner of Cappellino’s Crazy Cakes, <br />spoke on behalf of merchants on side streets, and said visibility is important to their <br />success. She said she hopes signage will be allowed to the side street businesses, and that <br />communication between the City and merchants be kept open. <br /> <br />st <br /> Ms. Susan Sorbello, 101 and 105 E. Water Street and 100 South 1 Street, owner <br />of Camillias and Main Street Bridal, said she paid $750 for signs and a permit and the <br />signs are now down. She said she understands the requirement for disability compliance, <br />but asked the City to work with side street merchants. <br /> <br />th <br /> Ms. Nora Ayala, 103 5 Street, S.E., suggested that bike racks or planters be <br />installed under side street signs to make them ADA compliant. <br /> <br /> Mr. Frank Cappellino, co-owner of Cappellino’s Crazy Cakes, said the main <br />concern is signs as his business has been down since the signs have been gone. He asked <br />Council to take a look at the issue as soon as possible and let merchants know what the <br />design is going to be for future signs. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jaclynn Dunkle, owner of Fellini’s #9 at 200 E. Market Street, said signage <br />on the mall is necessary for side street merchants. <br /> <br />th <br /> Ms. Elizabeth Kurka, owner of The Cat House at 102 5 Street, S.E., said she <br />desperately needs signage on the mall as well as sandwich boards. She said there are also <br />issues with trash on the mall. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lowell Brown, Palmyra, representing 100 Black Men of Central Virginia, <br />invited Council to their inaugural event and asked for support for future initiatives to <br />support African American students. <br /> <br /> <br />
