<br />COUNCIL CHAMBER – September 8, 2009 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: <br />Dr. Brown, Ms. Edwards, Mr. Huja, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. <br /> <br />ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris announced that the City will sponsor a peace concert on September 11, <br />the City’s job fair will be held on October 20, Government Services Day will be on <br />October 2, and public workshops for CRHA redevelopment will be held on September 23 <br />and 24. <br /> <br />AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS <br />: FLICKER THE FLAME; CHAMBER MUSIC <br />FESTIVAL <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris presented Flicker the Flame, the City’s gas mascot, with the marketing <br />and sales award from the American Public Gas Association. <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris presented a proclamation honoring the Charlottesville Chamber Music <br />th <br />Festival’s 10 anniversary. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Ms. Colette Hall, 101 Robertson Lane, said that Rivanna Water and Sewer <br />Authority’s and Rivanna Solid Waste Authority’s actions are sometimes questionable. <br />She said the City and County should get out of the garbage business. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jim Moore, 1213 Hazel Street, representing the McIntire Park Golf <br />Committee, said that the City’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee is showing <br />favoritism by allowing the botanical garden group to meet with them, but not the Golf <br />Committee. He said he was told they would have to wait for the park master planning <br />process. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stratton Salidas, 704 Graves Street, said that VDOT sent surprising plans to <br />the Corps of Engineers regarding Meadowcreek Parkway which shows no interchange. <br />He said they are trying to evade federal protections. He asked Council to stand up for <br />honest government. <br /> <br /> Ms. Linda Seaman, 2010 Greenbrier Drive, said there are two major projects in <br />her neighborhood that affect many residents, and presented a resolution passed by the <br />neighborhood association asking that the two projects be considered together as well as <br />other requests about the projects. <br /> <br /> Mr. Paul Long, 1410 Grady Avenue, said affordable housing is difficult for many <br />in Charlottesville. He proposed a new policy that would required all new commercial <br />housing to have 50% of their units for sale for under $60,000 or rent 50% for $600 or <br />less. <br /> Mr. Downing Smith, 810 Locust Avenue, said he has read disturbing information <br />in The Hook about the Vanderlinde case brought by Rivanna Solid Waste Authority. He <br />said it looks like a vindictive lawsuit. <br /> <br /> Ms. Brenda Lamberth, 301 Monte Vista Avenue, supported the resolution <br />requested by Equality Virginia regarding nondiscrimination in public employment. <br /> <br /> Ms. Audrey Hayes, Orange County, asked people in the audience to stand who <br />support the nondiscrimination resolution and a large number stood. <br /> <br /> Mr. Edwards Strickler, 8323 Scottsville Road, presented data on employment <br />discrimination and its economic impact and low wages. <br /> <br /> Ms. Robin Hoffman, 2609 Huntington Road, supported the nondiscrimination <br />resolution. She said she is married to an Hispanic and sees discrimination, and as a <br />woman, has been discriminated against. <br /> <br />
