60 <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Churchill said the proposal for the <br />City Market is to holda design charette in the fall from which ideas could be taken and <br />integrated into a request for proposals. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter said downtown business people have suggested that the proposed shuttle <br />between U. Va. and downtown be promoted in ways such as merchants purchasing bus <br />tokens to give away to customers. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter recommended that staff look at the possibility of improving signage to <br />the City Market and parking lots and garages. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano said he feels there needs to be a larger charette on emerging downtown <br />issues, not only on the City Market lot, and recommended that the occasion of the 20th <br />anniversary of the downtown mall, which will occur this summer, be used as an opportunity <br />to seek input and draw attention to the mall. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter suggested that staff look at the input from the 1989 downtown charette, <br />and recommended that the Urban Design Committee be included and help participate in <br />planning the charette. However, Ms. Slaughter added that she feels a separate charette <br />should be held regarding the City Market at an earlier date than the general dmvntown <br />charette. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano asked staff to develop a time-line for a charette. <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Ms. Jane Erlich, Brandywine Drive, announced a "Parents for Peace" march and health <br />and creativity festival, to be held on the downtown mall June 1 st, with the goal being to bring <br />families together. Ms. Erlich asked the community to participate in a letter writing campaign <br />to recognize people who should be acknowledged for doing an excellent job of parenting <br /> <br /> Mr. Michael Clark, a City Market vendor, said that the Market participants will be <br />requesting a work session with the Planning Commission to work on design elements of the <br />Market, and will be requesting the participation of the Thomas Jefferson Planning District <br />Commission as well.
