133 <br /> <br />COUNCiL CHAMBER - March 6, 1995 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Ms. <br />Daugherty, Rev. Edwards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano, Mr. Vandever. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. James Andrew Jackson, Route 4, Box 266, expressed concern about the safety of <br />people working in the Circuit Courthouse, and stated that seven of the eight employees in the <br />office of the Circuit Court Clerk, including his wife, have been to a doctor since the building <br />was reoccupied, b/Ir. Jackson asked Council to look into the matter. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano stated that the City is trying to monitor the situation at the Courthouse <br />and will take whatever action is necessary to safeguard employees. <br /> <br /> Mr. Thomas Calioway, 831 Harris Road, stated that his wife, who is pregnant and is an <br />employee in the Circuit Court Clerk's office, has been advised by her doctor not to go back <br />into the Courthouse. Mr. Calloway stated that he thinks the problem needs to be addressed <br />right away. <br /> <br /> b/Ir. Hendrix stated that Courthouse staff had been moved ont last summer and since <br />that time the building has been scrubbed and tested, and experts have said that they can find <br />nothing wrong with the building at this time. Mr. Hendrix explained that he met with the <br />Circuit Court Judge, the Sheriff, and Clerk of the Circuit Court, and told them to make <br />contingency plans to move, if necessary, adding that the Sheriffs office has already moved <br />out of the building. Mr. Hendrix stated that additional experts have been called to inspect the <br />building. <br /> <br /> /vlr~ Paul Garrett, Clerk of the Circuit Court, stated that he is concerned with health <br />risks to Courthouse employees and the public, and stated that the situation is putting stress <br />on employees and their families. Ivlr. Garrett stated that he has been looking for space to <br />relocate. <br /> <br />CONSENT AGENDA <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty acknowledged the donation of $100,000 by the late Mrs. Ruth C. <br />Heede, a Florida resident who spent her summers in the Charlottesville area, for the purchase <br />of an emergency paramedic van. <br /> <br /> On motion by, seconded by, the following consent agenda items were unanimously <br />approved: <br /> <br />Minutes of February 21 <br /> <br />b. APPROPRiATiON: $28,140 - Project ADAPT (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> BE iT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia that the sum <br />of $39,345.00, to be received from the Virginia Department of Social Services, is hereby <br />appropriated to expenditure 12-161-062240 to fund a staff person to assist in the <br />development of Project ADAPT. <br /> <br />c. APPROPRIATION: $i,500 - Alco-Sensor Grant from DMV (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that the sum <br />of $1,500.00, to be received as a grant from the Department of Motor Vehicles, is hereby <br />appropriated to account number 1 t-270-04t 143, to be expended by the City Police <br />Department to support the Sobriety Checkpoint Program. This appropriation is conditioned <br />upon receipt of $1,500.00 from the Department of Motor Vehicles. <br /> <br /> <br />
