246 <br /> <br /> Mr. Andrew Serpe, a 4th year University of Virginia <br />student, requested that Council endorse a resolution adopted <br />by the U. Va. Student Council designating the week of April <br />7th through 16th as "Sharing Charlottesville" week. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Rev. Edwards, the <br />resolution proclaiming Sharing Charlottesville week was <br />unanimously approved by Council <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville includes within its <br />community the citizens of Charlottesville and the students of <br />the University of Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, those citizens and students share many common <br />concerns, needs, and goals; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, those citizens and students believe that a <br />healthy relationship between them is vital to creating an <br />overall harmony in the Charlottesville area; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the entire community would benefit from the <br />setting aside of a week to concentrate its efforts toward <br />promoting interaction and understanding among its members; <br /> <br /> THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the time period of April <br />7th through 16th be set aside for this purpose and be called <br />"Sharing Charlottesville,"~and <br /> <br /> THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council and the <br />University of Virginia Student Council pledge themselves to <br />the maintenance of goodwill and understanding between the two <br />communities. <br /> <br /> Ms. Betty Newell, President of the Jefferson Area United <br />Transportation (JAUNT) Board, requested CounCil's support of a <br />resolution supporting the Odyssey Program~grant which was <br />previously withdrawn by the JAUNT Board. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that the Metropolitan Planning <br />Organization had written a letter asking the JAUNT Board to <br />reconsider approving the grant. <br /> <br /> It was agreed that the matter would be considered at the <br />end of the meeting. <br /> <br /> Mr. William Johnson, Old Lynchburg ROad, stated that he <br />felt the school system continues to spend money but is not <br />accomplishing anything. Mr. Johnson stated that Council <br />should demand accountability from the School Board. Mr. <br />Johnson also stated that he felt teachers in the early grades <br />are not allowed to correct students. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Stern, a member of the Social Development <br />Commission, stated that terms of three members of the <br />Commission will expire in August and he urged Council to <br />advertise early for the vacancies. <br /> <br />CONSENT AGENDA <br /> <br /> The resolutions approving permit parking for Price Avenue <br />and approving a cafe permit for the Jazz Club were removed <br />from the consent agenda. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Ms. Daugherty, <br />the following consent agenda items were unanimously approved, <br />with the minutes amended by Ms. Slaughter: <br /> <br />a. Minutes of March 16, 23, 24, 28, 31 and April 4 <br /> <br />.b. APPROPRIATION: $8,000 - Demonstration Maintenance <br /> Project for E. High St. corridor (2nd reading) <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br /> <br /> <br />
