205 <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Wednesday, <br />September 9, 1992 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Basement Conference <br />Room. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon meeting with School Board <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (si~ned) <br /> <br />BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM - September 9, 1992 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the <br />following members present: Ms. Daugherty, Rev. Edwards, Ms. <br />Slaughter, Mr. Toscano, Mr. Vandever. <br /> <br /> Dr. Joseph McGeehan, Superintendent of Schools, stated <br />that the Whittle Corporation will be removing the equipment <br />previously used to broadcast Channel I since the School Board <br />had made the decision to discontinue the broadcast, and the <br />schools will be accepting bids to lease/Purchase 46 <br />television sets and will be exploring, with the involvement <br />of students and teachers, other opportunities for news <br />coverage. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter recommended that the schools explore <br />having copies of the University Journal and Cavalier Daily in <br />the schools for students, adding that they might be able to <br />arrange to have them provided free of charge. <br /> <br /> Ms. Arletta Dimberg, Assistant Superintendent of <br />Schools, reviewed the reading initiatives which have been <br />designed to provide instructional quality and consistency, <br />including strong staff development program, refined Chapter I <br />program, support of instructional assistants and a tutorial <br />program. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano questioned whether the School Board had any <br />issues to suggest for discussion at the City Council retreat <br />and Mr. Rauzelle Smith, Chairman of the School Board, <br />provided the following: <br /> <br /> "How will the City Council assist this community with <br />the achievement of the President's first National Educational <br />Goal which is: By the year 2000, all children in America <br />will start school ready to learn? Will all disadvantaged and <br />disabled children have access to high quality and <br />developmentally appropriate pre-school programs that help <br />prepare children for school? In what ways can every parent/ <br />guardian be a child's first teacher and devote time each day <br />helping his or her pre'school child learn? Will parents have <br />access to the training and support they need? Will children <br />receive the nutrition and health care needed to arrive at <br />school with 'healthy minds and bodies, and the number of low <br />birth weight babies be significantly reduced through enhanced <br />pre-natal health systems." <br /> <br /> T~ ~e~t~ng was adjourned. <br /> <br />~ esiaent C e~k - <br /> <br /> <br />
