Edwards, Ms. <br />Slaughter, Mr. Toscano, Mr. Vandever. <br /> <br /> Council participated in call-in to give citizens an <br />opportunity to express their opinion and raise questions <br />about budget priorities. <br /> <br />Council adjourned at 7:00 p.m. <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - February 1, 1993 <br /> <br /> Council reconvened in open session on this date with the <br /> following members present: Ms. Daugherty, Rev. Edwards, Ms. <br /> Slaughter, Mr. Toscano~. Mr~Vandever. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. Jonathan Spivey, 714 Orangedale Avenue, representing <br />the Orangedale Neighborhood Association, requested that a <br />four-way stop sign be installed at the intersection of Bailey <br />and Prospect Avenue. <br /> <br /> Ms. Danielle Gibson, 816 Belmont Avenue, announced the <br />formation of the North Belmont Neighborhood Association and <br />stated that the Association hoped to work closely with the <br />City on development of the CSX property and other projects of <br />interest to the neighborhood. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ed Travis, 724 Locust Avenue, representing the Grove <br />Avenue Neighborhood Association, requested that Council <br />reroute Route 20 so that traffic does not travel through the <br />City. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sharleen Martenas and Mr. Rudy Beverly stated that <br />they have been involved in the Forums for Hope and Healing <br />which have occurred three times over the previous summer and <br />again last week to discUss race relations and requested that <br />Council endorse a statement opposing racially motivated <br />behavior. Ms. Martenas and Mr. Beverly explained that the <br />statement was written as a result of an apparent racially <br />motivated assault on the Corner. Mr. Beverly also announced <br />that a gathering would be held at the University across from <br />the Corner on Friday, February 5th to discuss the issue. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter amended the statement to remove reference <br />to the assault on the Corner. and made a motion to endorse the <br />amended statement. Rev~Edwards seconded the motion and the <br />following statement was unanimously endorsed by Council: <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is necessary that each of us examines our <br />own heart and behavior in an effort to eradicate the <br />prejudices we find in ourselves and to undertake positive <br />steps to address issues of racism in our community; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the City Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, want to make it clear to all citizens of the <br />City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, as well as to <br />the communities of the entire nation, that we will not <br />tolerate racially motivated behavior. <br /> <br /> <br />
