THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: Executive session as provided by Section 2.1-344(A)(I) of the Virginia Code BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR BY Jeanne Cox (signed) SECOND FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM - September 2, 1997 Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: Mr. Cox, Ms. Daugherty, Ms. Richards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano On motion by Mr. Toscano, seconded by Ms. Daugherty, Council voted to meet in executive session for the purpose of appointed members to various City boards or agencies, as authorized by Section 2.1-344(A)(1) of the Virginia Code, with Mr. Cox and Ms. Richards absent for the vote. Council reconvened in open session and, on motion by Ms. Daugherty, seconded by Mr. Cox, certified that, to the best of each member's knowledge, (i) only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia law were discussed in the executive meeting to which this certification resolution applies, and (ii) only such public business matters as were identified in the motion convening the executive meeting were heard, discussed or considered by the Council. The meeting was adjourned. President ~ COUNCIL CHAMBER I September 2, 1997 Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Mr. Cox, Ms. Daugherty, Ms. Richards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano PUBLIC Mr. Bernhard Leipelt asked that Council respond to President Clintoffs appeal for racial hearing by 1) issuing a multi-media invitation to the community to contribute ideas; 2) hold a brainstorming feedback session; and 3) appoint a multi-ethnic commission. Dr. Henry Silva supported Mr. Leipelt's request, noting that racism still exists in Charlottesville. Dr. Silva asked what the community is doing to help young black children obtain jobs, and suggested renaming a street in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., which he feels would instill pride in the black community. Mr. Barry McLane, 3085 Earlysville Road, a founder of"You've Got a Friend" day, invited the Council and public to attend the 4th annual "You've Got a Friend" day on September 20th at Charlottesville High School.
