90 <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Wednesday, <br />August 16, 1989 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Public Works Center on <br />Avon Street Extended. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon meeting with School Board <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (signed) <br /> <br />PUBLIC WORKS CENTER - August 16, 1989 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the <br />following members present: Mr. Buck, Rev. Edwards, Mr. Towe, <br />Ms. Waters. Absent: Mr. Vandever._ <br /> <br /> Mr. Towe, a member of the Highway Safety Commission, <br />stated that the Commission was concerned about what impact <br />that widening of Long Street might have on Burnley Moran <br />School, particularly the pedestrian crossing, loss of parking <br />and needed improvements on Mulberry Street. Mr. Towe <br />requested that the Council, School Board, staff, Burnley <br />Moran staff and PTO give input to the Department of <br />Transportation regarding the project. <br /> <br /> Dr. Joseph McGeehan, Superintendent of City Schools, <br />stated that he would ensure that input was given to the <br />Department of Transportation. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ji~mie Dunbar, Assistant Superintendent of City <br />Schools, stated that he would also follow up to ensure that <br />the Burnley Moran PTO was involved. <br /> <br /> Ms. Judith Mueller, Director of Public Works, stated <br />that she would provide Council and the School Board with <br />information regarding the time frame for the Long Street/ <br />Free Bridge project and any outstanding issues. <br /> <br /> Mr. Towe requested whether any action had been taken by <br />the Schools with regard to reinstating the athletic study <br />hall at Charlottesville High School. <br /> <br /> Dr. McGeehan stated that he has spoken with the coaches <br />and principal at CHS and the study hall will be reinstated in <br />order to assure that the athletics are provided with the <br />necessary academic support. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dunbar gave an update on renovations at Venable and <br />Walker Schools. Mr. Dunbar stated that two modular <br />classrooms have been added at Walker and additional lockers <br />will be moved out of the Walker cafeteria in order to provide <br />additional space. <br /> <br /> Dr. McGeehan stated that students at Venable will not <br />return to school until three days after other students return <br />from their winter vacation in order to provide additional <br />time to move from Clark into Venable. Dr. McGeehan explained <br />that the loss of time will be made up by adding an ten <br />minutes to the school day throughout the year. <br /> <br /> Responding to a request from Mr. Towe, Dr. McGeehan <br />gave some background information on Mr. Robert Thompson, <br />newly appointed principal at Buford School, and Mr. Frankel, <br />new principal at Walker School. <br /> <br /> There was a discussion of the use of various indicators <br />which the Schools could utilize in order to best reflect the <br />educational success and accountability of the Schools. <br /> <br /> Ms. Helen Poore, Transit Manager for the City, explained <br />that nine flat-nosed school buses have been received.
