103 <br /> <br /> Mr. Ron Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, <br />listed the following areas which will be considered by the <br />Drop-Out Task Force: 1) development of an historical profile <br />of past dropouts in Charlottesville and of a uniform <br />definition of dropouts; 2) examination of current attendance <br />and pupil accounting practices and procedures; 3) identifica- <br />of the potential dropout; 4) review of current research and <br />literature on dropouts and programs of prevention and <br />intervention; 5) identification and assessment of current <br />school programs, prevention and intervention strategies and <br />practices; 6) coordination and networking between and among <br />the schools, community agencies, organizations and businesses <br />on dropout prevention; and 7) staff development and inservice <br />opportunities and activities. <br /> <br /> Dr. McGeehan listed several areas of emphasis for <br />the next year for the City Schools, including the <br />following: totally revisiting the alternative education <br />program, especially as it relates to the drop-out issue; <br />increasing parental involvement in the schools and their role <br />in advising the SUperintendent and School Board; looking into <br />multi-cultural education and race relations and development <br />a five year plan to find ways to be effective with these <br />students; assuring the academic liberal arts studies are as <br />effective and dynamic as possible; examining decision.making <br />regarding teaching and learning. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Waters, Dr. McGeehan <br />stated that his goal will be to reduce the drop-out rate by <br />2% in the next year. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix stated that the Schools will play an <br />important role in drug education. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck recommended that the resources~of the <br />University of Virginia School of Education be used by the <br />Drug Task Force. <br /> <br /> Ms. Mary Reese, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, <br />stated that the four-year old program is in its second year <br />and is serving 45 students. <br /> <br />The- meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - September 18, 1989 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the <br />following members present: Mr. BuCk, Rev. Edwards (arrived <br />late), Mr. Towe, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. <br /> <br />MINUTES <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Towe, seconded by Mr. Buck, the minutes <br />of the August 16th meeting were approved as presented, with <br />Mr. VandeVer abstaining and Rev. EdwardS absent for the vote. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded by Mr. Towe, the <br />minutes of the August 28th meeting were approved as <br />presented, with Rev. Edwards absent for the vote. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded bY Mr~ Towe, the <br />minutes of the September 5th meeting were approved as <br />presented, with Rev.
