Edwards, Mr. Towe, <br />Ms. Waters. A-bsent: Mr.. Vandever. <br /> <br /> Dr. Joseph McGeehan,~ Superintendent of City Schools, <br />gave an 'update on the recommendations regarding the <br />Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center and <br />explained that the primary focus of the task force had been <br />on issues of governance, how to structure for the future, and <br />how decisions should be make. Dr. McGeehan stated that the <br />joint board of control is continuing~to meet and suggested <br />that consideration be given to both the City and County <br />School Board meeting to discuss the matter. <br /> <br /> Dr. McGeehan discussed the results of the Literacy <br />Passport Test, noting that approximately 80% of students <br />taking the test had passed. Dr. McGeehan stated that the <br />schools have been working with those students who failed <br />and summer school attendance has been encouraged. It was <br />noted that passing the-test is a requirement for graduation <br />from high school. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters requested that the School Board and Council <br />give reactions to continuing the Italian student exchange <br />program and exchanges with ~other countries as well. <br /> <br /> Both the School Board and Council members indicated <br />their support for re-establishing the Italian exchange <br />program. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards questioned whether the schools had been <br />successful in improving school attendance by taking parents <br />to court. <br /> <br /> Dr. McGeehan replied that some results have been seen <br />from the effort, but added that the procedure is very time <br />consuming for staff and attempts will be made to reduce the <br />time'involved. ~ <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck recommended that the schools use one school to <br />test the results of reducing the teacher/stude~nt ratio in <br />classrooms before reducing the ratio city wide. <br /> <br /> The meeting_was adjourned. <br /> . <br />Pr~ident . <br /> <br /> <br />
