158 <br /> <br /> Ms. Kaye Monroe of 414-B Garrett Square, stated that she <br />is a single mother raising three children and working towards <br />a goal of receiving her nursing degree at PVCC and bus route <br />~8 is her only means of transportation to~PVCC. <br /> <br /> Ms. Nancy O'Brien of 1605 Concord Drive, stated that she <br />rides bus route ~8 to and from work and recommended that the <br />City make an effort to encourage more people to ride the <br />buses, and added that she hoped the City could coordinate bus <br />service with the University Transit system. <br /> <br /> Dr. Debra DiCroce, President of PVCC, noted that when <br />bus route #8 began in 1984 it was a festive event viewed as a <br />great step forward for the community. Dr. Dicroce stated <br />that bus route #8 serves approximately 200 different students <br />per semester at PVCC and while some ride for convenience, for <br />many the bus is the only means of transportation. Dr. Dicroce <br />stated that bus route ~8 is the only public transportation <br />available to the community college and while she was aware of <br />the budget constraints and the need for efficiency, she felt <br />it was important to temper efficiency with equity. <br /> <br /> Mr. David Rigby of Brandy Avenue, recommended raising <br />fares on the bus or reducing the hours bus route #8 runs in <br />order to prevent elimination of the service. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dan Cox of Keith Valley Road, presented Council with <br />a survey of riders of the bus who live in the Meadowbrook <br />Heights area who favored maintaining the route and stated <br />that he had moved to his present residence in order to take <br />advantage of bus route #8. <br /> <br /> Ms. Rosie Ballister of Brandywine Drive, encouraged <br />Council to maintain bus route #8 and better publicize the <br />route in order to attract more riders. <br /> <br /> Col. Carroll Smith, encouraged Council to maintain the <br />bus route and added that perhaps Delegate Mitchell Van <br />Yahres' suggestion that the University of Virginia should <br />focus more on third and fourth year students will increase <br />the number of students enrolled at PVCC. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ray Haas, Vice President of Administration at the <br />University of Virginia, asked Council to reconsider <br />eliminating bus route #8 for people who work at Blue Ridge <br />Hospital. <br /> <br /> Mr, George Jordan, representing the Interfaith Alliance <br />for Youth, recommended that Council look to other coSt <br />savings in the budget, such as energy conservation, rather <br />than cutting human development programs. <br /> <br /> Ms. Alicia Lugo stated that she was on the PVCC Board <br />when bus route #8 was added and the route was never expected <br />to make money. Ms. Lugo recommended that the route be <br />expanded to serve students attending night classes. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hank Allen of 100 Wakefield Court, stated that <br />maintaining bus route #8 would show Council's support for the <br />community and for the value of education. <br /> <br /> As there were no other speakers, the public hearing was <br />closed. <br /> <br /> Rev° Edwards stated that he was in favor of maintaining <br />the bus route, but noted that maintaining the service will <br />require cutting other items in the CitY budget. <br /> <br />REPORT: COORDINATION OF CHARLOTTESVILLE AND UNIVERSITY TRANSIT <br />SYSTEMS <br /> <br />Ms. Waters stated that coordination of Charlottesville <br /> <br /> <br />
