Absent: Rev. Edwards.

Rev. Peter Way, Chairman of the Albemarle County Board
of Supervisors, stated that the County was interested in
approaching the Department of Transportation regarding
providing an exit off of Interstate 64 at Avon Street. Rev.
Way stated that the Department of Transportation had
previously rejected the request for the following reasons:
1) There was an inadequate amount of development on Avon
Street, particularly industrial development; 2) There were
safety concerns because of the closeness of exits off of
Interstate 64; and 3) Interstate roads are not built to solve
local traffic problems. Rev. Way stated that development has
significantly increased on Avon Street, he did not believe
an additional exit would create a safety problem, and that an
exit would be beneficial to truck traffic on Interstate 64 as
well as to City school buses which are parked on Avon Street.
Rev. Way requested guidance from Senator Thomas Michie as to
the best way to approach the Department of Transportation
regarding the matter.

Senator Michie stated that he would speak with
Department of Transportation officials to see how to proceed
and will explore the safety concerns and see how they can be
addressed or waived.

Ms. Waters stated that it was her understanding that the
City had previously supported the exit ramps at Avon Street
and requested that staff provide Council with some historical
information on the matter.
