COUNCIL CHAMBER - July 2, 1990 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the <br />following members present: Rev. Edwards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. <br />Toscano, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. <br /> <br /> ~r. Hendrix called the meeting to order and asked for <br />nom~ations for Mayor. <br /> <br />Mr. Vandever nominated Rev. Alvin Edwards for Mayor. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, the nominations were <br />unanimously closed. <br /> <br />Rev. Edwards was unanimously elected Mayor. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards thanked Council for their support and asked <br />for nominations for Vice Mayor. <br /> <br />Ms. Slaughter nominated Mr. Tom Vandever for Vice Mayor. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Toscano, the nominations were <br />unanimously closed. <br /> <br />Mr. Vandever was unanimously elected Vice Mayor. <br /> <br />MINUTES <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Waters, seconded by Mr. Vandever, the <br />minutes of the June llth meeting were approved as presented, <br />with Ms. Slaughter and Mr. Toscano abstaining. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Waters~ seconded by Rev. Edwards, the <br />minutes of the~June l~th meeting were approved as presented, <br />with Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano and Mr. Vandever abstaining. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded by Ms. Waters, the <br />minutes of the June 18th meeting were approved as presented, <br />with Ms. Slaughter and Mr. Toscano abstaining. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. Lee Barnes, President of the University of Virginia <br />Student Council stated that he recognized the importance of <br />the City and University working together and acknowledged the <br />commitment of the Student Council, Inter-Fraternity Council <br />and Inter-Sorority Council to work together with the <br />community. Mr. Barnes was accompanied by Scott Williams, <br />President of the Inter-Fraternity Council and Pam Feinour, <br />President of the Inter-Sorority Council. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herbert Tucker of Lewis Mountain Road, announced the <br />formation of an ad hoc group of citizens formed in response <br />to plans to cut back military spending. Mr. Tucker stated <br />that the group will: 1) survey local contractors regarding <br />the effect of cutbacks; 2) compose a list of peace time <br />products which could be substituted~ 3) determine educational <br />resources to help persons laid off from their jobs; and <br />4) help determine how funds made available as a result of <br />reductions in military spending could be spent at the local <br />level. Mr. Tucker introduced Mr. Worrell and Mr. 0'Dell. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jay Worrell of Keswick stated that the group hopes <br />to create a model for use in other communities and hopes to <br />shift the focus from war to quality of life. <br /> <br /> Mr. Roger O'Dell stated that he hoped that citizen <br />participation in the community would increase in ways similar <br />to the group studying the effects of military spending <br />cutbacks. <br /> <br /> Mr. Bob Garrity of Raymond Avenue reviewed the <br />neighborhood based reading program which has been operating <br /> <br /> <br />
