MINUTES <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: <br />TOM HATCH, <br />DATA PROCESSING <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: <br />$25,000 FIRE <br />TRAINING CENTER <br />(2nd reading) <br /> <br />~o.f increasing fines and/or towing of vehicles in violation. <br /> <br /> On a question from Mrs. Gleason, Mr. Wiley stated that the City <br /> does have enforcement powers for handicapped spaces in business-parki, ng'~ <br /> lots that are open to the public. <br /> <br /> Mrs~ Gleason moved, Dr. Hall seconded the motion, and Council <br /> unanimously voted to go into Executive Session. to discuss legal matters <br /> as exempted by Section 2.1~344 (a)(6) of. th6'¥irginia Freedom of <br /> <br />InfOrmation..Act, <br /> <br /> The meeting was~adjourned. <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> COUNCIL CHAMBERS - November 7, 1983 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session this date with the following members <br />present: Mr. Buck, Mr. Conover, Mrs. Gleason, Dr. Gunter. Absent: Dr. <br />Hall. (aririved late) <br /> <br /> On motion by Mrs. Gleason, seconded by Mr. Buck, the minute's of <br />October l!lth were approved as presented, with Mr. Conover and Dr. Gunter <br />abstaining. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mrs. Gleason, seconded by Mr. Conover, the minutes of <br /> October 17th were unanimously approved-as presented. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mrs. Gleason, seconded by Mr. Conover, the minutes of <br /> October 18th were unanimously approved as presented. <br /> <br /> On a request by Mr~ Wiley, approval of the minutes of OCtober 24th <br /> <br /> and October 27th Was deferred until the next meeting. <br /> <br /> Dr. Charles Tolbert from the Astronomy Department of the University <br /> <br />of Virginia, asked for Council's approval of a resolution endorsing the <br />location Of the Very Long Baseline Array Operations center at the University. <br /> <br /> Mr. Conover moved approval of the resolution, Dr. Gunter seconded the <br />motion, and the resolution was unanimously approved. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the National Radio Astronomical Observatory Headquarters <br />is. located on the grounds of the University of Virginia and is a major <br />component!in the scientific and technical life of the area; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, its proposed Very Long Baseline Array Operations Center <br />would provide significant additional high technology, and academic <br />development; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, having this type of facility enhances economic oo~ortunities <br />and enriches the entire~community; and .... <br /> <br /> WHERDAS, the. decision on the location of the Operations Center will <br />soon be made; <br /> <br /> ~HER~FORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council strongly encourages the <br />University and the business community to make every effort to establish <br />a favorablle environment for the Center, and the Council expresses its <br />support for its location in the community. <br /> <br /> Dr. Hlall joined the meeting at this time. <br /> <br /> Mr. ?om Hatch, Data Processing Director, explained the three main <br />functions of his department: 1) maintenance of the data base, 2) access <br />to the data base, and 3) technical advice and training. He stated that <br />the computer can be expanded to meet the future needs of the City. Thirty <br />terminals are located throughout the City offices which allows direct <br /> <br />access to the computer's information. <br /> <br /> The Data Processing Department is responsible for the City's Word <br />Processing Center and Copy Center. <br /> <br />The Appropriation of $25,000 for the Fire Training Center was approved <br /> <br /> <br />
