ORDINANCE: <br />AMENDING SMOKE <br />DETECTOR <br />ORDINANCE <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br />OTHER BUSINESS <br /> <br />RESOLUTION: <br />CONGRATULKTING <br />U. VA. FOOTBALL <br />TEAM <br /> <br /> Mr. Wiley stated this ordinance would require smoke detectors in <br />single family rental prope,rty and would allow the fire chief to delegate <br />enforcement to the inspections division. <br /> <br /> Mr. Julian Taliaferro, Fire Chief, stated that he supported the <br />ordinance because it gives earlier notification of a fire and helps improve <br />life safety~ <br /> <br /> Mrs. Gleason questioned the grandfather clause in the ordinance but <br />Mr. Wiley explained that the State mandated the Clause. <br /> <br /> On motion by Dr. Gunter, seconded by Dr. Hall, the ordinance entitled <br />"AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND AND REORDAIN SECTION 11-5 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY <br /> <br />OF CHARLOTTESVILLE (1976), AS AMENDED, TO STRENGTHEN REQUIREMENTS FOR SMOKE <br />DETECTORS IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS" was offered and carried over to the next <br />meeting for consideration. <br /> <br /> 'There were~no matters by the public. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix noted that the next meeting would be on Tuesday, January <br />22nd due to the Monday holiday on the 21st. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck asked if Council wanted to discuss the consent agenda report. <br /> Mr. Barnes stated his preference that the report be discussed at a-later <br /> <br />date. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck suggested discussing the consent agenda at the next meeting <br />and having the person who prepared the report be present. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Gleason read a resolution commending the University of Virginia <br />football team for their successful season and their winning of the Peach <br />Bowl. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes suggested that the resolution also commend the assistant <br />coaches. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mrs. Gleason, seconded by Dr. Hall, the resolution was <br />unanimously approved by Council. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Cavaliers began their 1984 football season on a <br />disappointing note but refused to let one loss defeat them; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, through a season of eight wins, two losses and two ties, <br />the Cavaliers, Coach George Welsh.and his assistant coaches, by their <br />dedication, determination and optimistic enthusiasm created in this <br />community a new spirit of hope and excitement about Cavalier football.; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Cavaliers made their first trip to a bowl game in <br />1984 and won the prestigious Peach Bowl in Atlanta on December 31, <br />thus giving the entire community special reason to celebrate New. Year's <br />Eve; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia hereby proclaims January 19, 1985 as CAVALIER <br />FOOTBALL DAY. We thank the Cavaliers not only for the excitement of <br />the winning season which they gave us, but for the fine manner in which <br />the'players, .coaches and staff represented this'community as our <br />ambassadors in Atlanta. We wish them continued success and hope they <br />remain undefeated forever in post-season~play. <br /> <br />On motion by Dr. Hall, seconded by Dr. Gunter, Council unanimously <br /> <br />voted to meet in executive session for personnel and legal matters as <br /> <br />exempted by Section 2 .1- 344 (a) (1) and (6) of the Virginia Freedom of <br /> <br /> Inf~mation Act. <br /> eting <br /> President ' <br /> <br />was adjour.ned. <br /> <br />5 <br /> <br /> <br />
