4'I6 <br /> <br /> Mr. Peter McIntosh of 624 David Avenue supported the proposed <br />funding for ~he Shelter for Help in Emergency. <br /> <br /> Ms, Eleanor Shannon of 1925 Blue Ridge Road supported <br /> <br />the SchoQ1 Board's request for funding and said that the City <br />should pay adequate salaries to its teachers. <br /> Ms, Janet Miller of 1621 Rugby Avenue supported full funding <br />for the School Board., <br /> Ms, Mary Updike of 1314 Rose Hill Drive and representing the <br />League of Women Voters offered various suggestions for the City and <br />School Board budgets and commended City.staff on its readable <br />budget. <br /> <br /> Ms, Sue Lewis of 1615B Amherst Street, president of the <br />Charlottesville Council for Quality Education, spoke in favor of <br />keeping Crow pool open because its closing would have serious <br />implications for the educational opportunities for the schools. <br />She supported full funding for the School Board. <br /> <br /> Mr. Oscar Bo~les of 1604 Rickey Road opposed the tax rate <br /> increase and said there was too much waste in City government. <br /> <br /> _~. ~Ms. Gall Comras of 1623A Meridian Street opposed the tax rate <br /> increase and said that welfare recipients and the wealthy were <br /> the ones benefitting from the services offered by the City, on <br /> the taxes payd by working people. <br /> <br /> Ms, Peggy Comfort of 2203 Brandywine Drive supported the <br /> School Board's request for funding and said she ~would be willing <br /> to pay even more property taxes if it meant funding the schools. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jean Meinhart of 1714 Yorktown Drive supported the <br /> <br /> SchoOl Board funding request and said that education was the most <br /> important service offered by the City. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ken Ackerman, director of M.A.C.A.A., asked Council to <br /> fund~.~eadstart, the summer food and recreation program, and the <br /> utility rel~ief program. He said that human needs would not Only <br /> remain the same but also increase as the economy got worse and <br /> the City budget becamectighter. <br /> <br /> Ms, Amy Castillo, ~ S.H.E volunteer and board member, ~ <br /> supported funding for the shelter. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jerry HoOd commended Council and the City staff for the <br /> good job they do and said that from his experience, Charlottesville <br /> residenta get good value for their tax dollars. He urged <br /> <br /> Council not to lose sight of the importance of quality education. <br /> <br /> Mr, Dennis Moltonof 207 Humphreys Dorm supported funding <br /> <br /> for the Shelter for Held in Emergency. <br /> <br /> Dr. Wallace Reed said he was a satisfied taxpayer and that <br /> the quality of services in Charlottesville is high compared to <br /> most other cities, He supported the proposed tax increase. <br /> Mr, Francis Fife said he also felt Charlottesville residents <br /> get their dollars' worth in services but reminded Council that <br /> some people are really hurting financially during these hard <br /> times and urged Council to continue funding for essential human <br /> <br /> <br />
