Staff report re: <br />Downtown mall <br />s culp ture <br /> <br />Staff report re: <br />VHDA urban preservation <br />and infill program <br /> <br />Staff report re: <br />Tonsler Park <br /> <br />Appropriation re: <br />$1,604 Tonsler. iPark <br /> <br />Appropriation re: <br />$6,000Downtown <br />mall sculpture grant <br /> <br /> Mr. Saty Huja, Director of Planning, speaking for <br /> <br /> the Mall Sculpture Jury, requested Council's approval of the <br /> <br /> jury' for an artist and sculpture project for <br /> the downtown ~ The jury recommended Mr. James Hagan and his <br /> <br /> proposed proj ~ct of six steel sculptures to be placed at <br /> various locat~ on the mall, Mr. Huja stated that Downtown <br /> Charlottesvi! .e, Inc., -supports the recommendation and ~that <br /> the jury woul, work with'the artist through the completion of <br /> the project. Mr. Conover remarked that the community, especially <br /> tkedowntown ~onma. unity, should be-well informed of the proposed <br /> project aa it will maka a significant impact on the downnown mall <br /> <br /> environment, He also wished to encourage other private donors <br /> to finance ects of a similar nature, since this one was so <br /> succes.aful so manyappealing proposals were submitted by area <br /> artists, r Buck inquired about the cost to mount the <br /> sculptures the mall ~surface and Mr. Huja replied that it <br /> would be and within the budgeted amount, though some <br /> City crews Id be working with the artist in the actual <br /> installation On motion by Mr. Conover, seconded by Ms. Gleason, <br /> Council voted approval of the jury's recommendation. <br /> Dr, Hall was for the vote. <br /> Mr. Huja uested Council's approval of a change in the VHDA <br /> urban preserva and infill program, Formerly, the two <br /> neighborhoods for this program were the 10th and Page <br /> Streets neighb and the Start Hill neighborhood. Now the <br /> staff has that these two can be combined into one <br /> neighborhood the staff requests that this be done and a <br /> <br /> second neighb :hood composed of Ridge Street and Belmont be <br /> <br />also desi~gnat~ for the funds. Dn motion by Ms. Gleason, seconded <br />by Mr. Council unanimously approved the recommendation. <br />Dr. Hall was sent for the vote. <br /> Mr. Gene Director of Parks and Recreation, presented <br />Council with alternatives for staffing the Tonsler Park <br />recreation bu this spring through June 30. The building <br />wa~ formerly by CETA personnel, who have been cut back. <br /> <br />For $1,604, ti Cityl could operate thc building as presently <br />operated through June 30. For $1 021 the City could operate it <br />from MaY 18 tq June 30, Far $729, the City could operate it <br />from June 1 tO! June 30. On motion by Mr. Buck, seconded by <br />Mr, Conover, ln. appropriation of $1~604 Was, offered and carried <br />over f~r consideration at the next meeting. <br /> Tke~ appro)riation of $6,000 for the downtown mall sculpture <br />grant, which w Ls offered at the meeting of March 16, was adopted <br />by the following vote, Ayes: Mr, Albro~ Mr?
