Staff report re: Downtown mall s culp ture Staff report re: VHDA urban preservation and infill program Staff report re: Tonsler Park Appropriation re: $1,604 Tonsler. iPark Appropriation re: $6,000Downtown mall sculpture grant Mr. Saty Huja, Director of Planning, speaking for the Mall Sculpture Jury, requested Council's approval of the jury' for an artist and sculpture project for the downtown ~ The jury recommended Mr. James Hagan and his proposed proj ~ct of six steel sculptures to be placed at various locat~ on the mall, Mr. Huja stated that Downtown Charlottesvi! .e, Inc., -supports the recommendation and ~that the jury woul, work with'the artist through the completion of the project. Mr. Conover remarked that the community, especially tkedowntown ~onma. unity, should be-well informed of the proposed project aa it will maka a significant impact on the downnown mall environment, He also wished to encourage other private donors to finance ects of a similar nature, since this one was so succes.aful so manyappealing proposals were submitted by area artists, r Buck inquired about the cost to mount the sculptures the mall ~surface and Mr. Huja replied that it would be and within the budgeted amount, though some City crews Id be working with the artist in the actual installation On motion by Mr. Conover, seconded by Ms. Gleason, Council voted approval of the jury's recommendation. Dr, Hall was for the vote. Mr. Huja uested Council's approval of a change in the VHDA urban preserva and infill program, Formerly, the two neighborhoods for this program were the 10th and Page Streets neighb and the Start Hill neighborhood. Now the staff has that these two can be combined into one neighborhood the staff requests that this be done and a second neighb :hood composed of Ridge Street and Belmont be also desi~gnat~ for the funds. Dn motion by Ms. Gleason, seconded by Mr. Council unanimously approved the recommendation. Dr. Hall was sent for the vote. Mr. Gene Director of Parks and Recreation, presented Council with alternatives for staffing the Tonsler Park recreation bu this spring through June 30. The building wa~ formerly by CETA personnel, who have been cut back. For $1,604, ti Cityl could operate thc building as presently operated through June 30. For $1 021 the City could operate it from MaY 18 tq June 30, Far $729, the City could operate it from June 1 tO! June 30.
