Regular Session <br /> <br />Approval of minutes <br /> <br />Staff report re: <br />Apple Classic Bike <br />Race <br /> <br /> COUNCIL CHAMBERS - MONDAY, JUNE 15, 1981 <br /> <br /> Council met on this date in regular session with the following <br /> members present: Mr. Buck, Mr. Conover, Ms. Gleason. Absent: Mr. <br /> Albro, Dr. Hall. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Conover, seconded by Ms. Gleason, Council <br /> as presented <br /> unanimously approved the minutes of June 1. On motion by Ms. Gleason, <br /> <br /> seconded by Mr. Conover, Council unanimously approved the minutes <br /> <br /> of June 8 with an amendment. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stripling, Assistant City Manager, requested Council's <br />approval of the 3rd annual Apple Classic Bike Race to be held on <br />Octoher 18, 1981. He asked Council to sen the insurance liability <br />for the sponsors and said the sponsors .would.take the responsibility <br />of personally notifying all the residents and businesses along the <br />race course, providing rest room facilities during the race, <br />providing volunteer marshalls to assist City police, assisting in <br />clean-up after the race and providing whatever insurance coverage <br />was required by Council. In the past, insurance liability has been <br />set at $300,.000 personal injury and $100,000 property damage. Mr. <br />Stripling estimated the City's expense for the race to be $930 <br />with Kruger Farms and Downtown Charlottesville, Inc., contributing <br />$200 and $75 respectively. Mr. Marc Kruger of Kruger Farms told <br />Council that the Apple Classic has become a nationally recognized <br />competitive race. He asked for a street closing of 12:30 p~m. so <br />that a Famiiy Fun Ride and some amateur races could be held before <br />the competitive race begins at 1:00 p.m. Ms. Gleason asked that <br />the no parking signs include the times so that people attending <br />church in the area on that Sunday morning will know they can park <br />on the streets until 12:30 p.m. Mr. Buck asked if Kruger would be <br />willing to delay the race until 2:00 p.m. if there is a funeral <br />scheduled at Hill and Woo~ Funeral Home, according to their <br />agreement last year when Hill and Wood complained that patrons were <br />unable to get to the establishment during the race. Mr. Kruger <br />agreed to this. Mr. Buck also requested that Kruger and DCI <br />contribute more than $275 since the City's costs had risen about <br />10% over last year's cost.
