210

COMMUNIT~"(SOME ON THE STAFF OF THE UNIVERSITY) RELATIVE TO THE FUTURE OF THE
UNIVERSITY. THE BURDEN OF THEIR REMARKS IS THAT NEITHER THE UNIVERSITY NOR THE CITY
AND THE COUNTY CAN EFFECTIVELY AND PROFITABLY ACCOHMODATE GROWTH OF THE UNIVERSITY TO
THE !8)000 TO 20~000 STUDENT LEVEL BY 1980 SUGGESTED FROM SOME SOURCES.

IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE CITY AND THE COUNTY SHOULD ASSIST THE UNIVERSITY IN ANY WAY
THAT WE CAN TO PROVIDE FACILITIES TO ACCOMMODATE ITS GROWTH. HOWEVER~ WE FERVENTLY HOPE
THAT THE UNIVERSITY CAN GROW AT A RATE WHICH WILL PERMIT IT TO MAINTAIN THE EXCELLENCE
1T HAS ATTAINED.

] FEAR THAT THERE ARE PRESSURES ON THE UNIVERSITY WHICH ARE VIRTUALLY FORCING IT TO

GROW TOO RAPIDLY. As A CONSEQUENCE THE COMMUNITY ITSELF MAY BE FORCED TO EXPAND ITS

FACILITIES TOO RAPIDLY.

IT IS QUITE CLEAR THAT WE IN THIS CITY AND COUNTY ARE NOT YET PROVIDING ADEQUATE
HOUSING FOR PEOPLE OF ALL INCOME LEVELS. ARE WE GOING TO DO SO IN THE FUTURE? THIS IS
JUST ONE PROBLEM AMONG MANY.

FOR THIS AND OTHER REASONS~ I SHOULD LIKE TO PROPOSE THAT THE COUNCIL OR THE PLANNING
COMMISSION BEGIN TO STUDY IN DEPTH THE FUTURE GROWTH OF THIS AREA~ AND JUST WHAT THE CiTY
SHOULD DO ABOUT IT.

ON MOTION BY MR. FIFE~ SECONDED BY MR. WRIGHT~ THE COUNCIL VOTED TO GO INTO EXECUTIVE
SESSION BY THE FOLLOWING RECORDED VOTE: AYES: MR. BARBOUR, MR. DAVIS~ MR. FIFE7 MR. VAN

YAHRES AND MR, WRIGHT. NOES: NONE,

ON MOTION THE MEETING ADJOURNED;

PRES 1 ENT

COUNCIL CHAMBER - DECEMBER 28, 1971

PUBLIC HEARING RE:
CHARTER CHANGES

PURSUANT TO THE FOLLOWING CALL:

HR. CHARLES L. BARBOUR
MR. KENNETH E. DAVIS
MR. FRANCIS H, FIFE
MR. MITCHELL VAN YAHRES
MR. J, W.
