BARBOUR, THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS <br />ADOPTED: <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, PASSAGE OF THE 27TH AMENDMENT TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION -- <br />THE "EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT~t -- REQUIRES RATIFICATION BY ~8 STATES$ AND <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ THE 1973 VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY WILL CONSIDER RATIFICATION OF <br />THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT.; AND <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, THE 27TH AMENDMENT IS DESIGNED TO ABOLISH DISCRIMINATION BY THE <br />LAW~ WHILE NOT ABRIDGING THE PRIVATE ACTIVITIEs OF CITIZENS OR SOCIAL CUSTOMS$ <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE~ BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY COUNCIL <br />RECOGNIZES THE 27TH AMENDMENT AS AN AFFIRMATION OF THE AMERICAN BELIEF IN LEGAL <br />EQUALITY OF ALL CtTIZENS$ AND <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE CHARLOTTESVILLE CiTY COUNCIL URGES <br />PASSAGE OF THE 27TH AMENDMENT BY THE 1973 VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY; AND <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION BE SPREAD IN THE <br />MINUTES OF THE CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF JANUARY 22, 1973~ WITH COPIES <br />SENT TO STATE SENATOR J.
