2 <br />WHEREAS, <br /> the Virginia Department of Fire Programs has awarded a grant t o <br />the City of Charlottesville specifically for fire service applications, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that a <br />total of $ 60,375.68, received from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, is hereby <br />appropriated i nto account 11 - 260 - 042020 - 54110 in the Grants Fund for the purpose of <br />funding additional training and equipment for the City of Charlottesville’s Fire <br />Department. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION <br />c. : $9,765.91 - Fire Training Center Grant (carried over) <br /> <br />PUBLIC HEARING <br />: SC HOOL BOARD APPOINTMENTS <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox read the list of names of School Board applicants for the three vacancies <br />on the School Board: Laurine Bennett - Moore, Byron Brown, Kenneth Jackson, Bradford <br />Lamb, Sue Lewis, William Lucy, John Santoski, Dede Smith, Muriel Wiggins, and Ken <br />Young. <br /> <br /> The public hearing was opened. <br /> <br /> Ms. Amy Hill, 811 Monticello Avenue, member of the Clark School PTO, <br />supported Muriel Wiggins because of her strong character and support of Jefferson <br />School. She also supported Sue Lewis because she said she is a wonderful consensus <br />builder, highly qualified financial advisor, has served on many community boards, and <br />can handle controversy. <br /> <br /> Ms. Katie Mullen, 510 B Antoinette Ave., supported Dede Smith who she said is <br />an active listener and grea t problem solver, and is tireless in her work to improve the <br />school system. She said she is also open to public comment. <br /> <br /> Ms. Leah Puryear supported Laurine Bennett - Moore who she said is a dedicated <br />and responsive Charlottesville native. She said she ha s been a teacher, administrator and <br />counselor for over 30 years, and has boundless energy. She said she has helped <br />struggling students and knows the community. <br /> <br /> Ms. Alicia Lugo supported Laurine Bennett - More who she said she has known all <br />her life and is a native Charlottesvillian. She said she knows the streets, families, <br />children and community. She said she is an energetic and reasonable person. She said <br />she has been working with the TeenSight program and is very cooperative. <br /> <br /> Mr. Russ Perry, speaki ng on behalf of himself and his wife, Jeanette Rosenberg, <br />supported Dede Smith who he said is an exemplary member of the School Board and is <br />always prepared. He said she frequently visits schools and is accessible to the <br />community. He said she is willin g to tackle tough issues, and urged that she be <br />reappointed. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lloyd Snook, supported Dede Smith. He said she is always the best prepared <br />and he has confidence in her judgment. He said her perspective about issues is how is <br />this going to help the kid s. <br /> <br /> Ms. Maurene Birdhead supported Laurine Bennett - Moore. She said she works <br />with her at TeenSight and she has the interest of all students at heart. She said she has <br />expertise, insight and a sense of humor. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Gaines spoke on behalf of Laurine Bennett - Moore. He said he has <br />known her most of his life and feels she would make an excellent School Board member. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dave Spence, 714 Northwood Avenue, supported Kenneth Young. He said <br />he is extremely open to all maters and would make an excellent School Board member. <br />He said he would balance finances with the needs of students, and is a wonderful listener. <br /> <br />
