NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY COUNCIL WILL BE <br />HELD ON Friday, October 17, 2003 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Boys and Girls Club, <br />Cherry Avenue <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br /> Luncheon meeting with School Board <br /> <br />BY O RDER OF THE MAYOR BY Jeanne Cox <br /> <br />BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB - October 17, 2003 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: <br />Mr. Cox, Mr. Lynch, Ms. Richards, Mr. Schilling. Absent: Mr. Caravati. <br /> <br /> The agreement between the City of Charlottesville, City Schools, and Boys and <br />Girls Club that will allow for the Boys and Girls Club to build a facility on Buford <br />School property was signed. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards announced that Governor Warner will preside over the <br />Computers4Kids grad uation ceremony. <br /> <br /> Mr. Harley Miles of Charlottesville Public Schools, reviewed the SOL results, <br />accreditation issues and Adequate Yearly Progress status. He said five schools are fully <br />accredited and 4 schools are conditionally accredited. <br /> <br /> Mr. Schillin g said the discrepancy in scores between white and black students is <br />trouble and feels it needs to be addressed. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards asked how the schools are addressing the issue of high school <br />students who may not graduate. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said that the disparity b etween black and white students is truly <br />alarming, and asked what can be done. <br /> <br /> Mr. Kenneth Leatherwood, Principal at Charlottesville High School, reviewed <br />graduation requirements and steps the School is taking to address this issue and the issue <br />of stude nts who may not graduate because of their SOL scores. Mr. Leatherwood said 60 <br />students currently have shortfalls in their credits. <br /> <br /> The meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />_____________________________ ___________________________ <br />President Clerk <br />
