Ayes: Mr. Caravati, Mr. Cox, Mr. Lynch, <br />Ms. Richards, Mr. Schilling. <br /> <br />ORDINANCE <br />: REZONING RIVERSIDE AVENUE AND CHESAPEAKE STREET <br />nd <br />PROPERTY TO PUD (2 reading) <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati applauded the fact that the applicants are goin g to give 1% of their <br />sales to Habitat for Humanities. <br /> <br /> Mr. Schilling said that while this project is probably laudable, he has some issues <br />with it. He said he agrees with Planner Commissioner Karen Firehock's comments about <br />setbacks and that we should g et something back in return for rezonings. He said there are <br />also parking issues and if accessory apartments come they will require additional parking. <br />He said the normal setback is 25 feet front and back and this will be 15 feet front and 5 <br />feet back,, putting the buildings closer to the park. He noted that one of the applicants <br />spoke out against a rezoning on Burgess Lane and traffic generated by the rezoning. <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati said he thinks Mr. Schilling makes a good point and he feels it is <br />incumbent o n Planning Commissioners to explain their positions. He said while Mr. <br />Schilling's points were well taken he will vote for the rezoning. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said the applicants have shown a willingness to pursue a unique housing <br />project. He said we will see these issues as we try to maximize housing opportunities. <br />He said he does not see the comparison with the Burgess Lane rezoning. <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati said he would argue for equitable behavior on the part of people in <br />the neighborhood and thinks this is comparable to the Burgess Lane rezoning. Noes: Mr. Schilling. <br /> <br />ORDINANCE <br />: CLOSING WERTLAND AVENUE ALLEY <br /> <br /> Mr. O'Connell said th e University of Virginia has asked that the alley be closed <br />which will allow redevelopment by a private developer for student housing. <br /> <br /> Ms. Mary Joy Scala, Planner in Neighborhood Development Services, explained <br />that the Planning Commission recommended ap proval of the alley closing, conditioned <br />on site plan approval and charging $14 a square foot because the closing will allow two <br />additional units. <br /> <br />
