HAGGERTY:

[ACH MEMBER OF CITY COUNCIL HAS RECEIVED A COPY OF A LETTER TO MR. BOWEN FROM
PRESIDENT SHANNON ABOUT THE CLOSING OF MCCORMICK ROAD AND THE CONTINUATION OF A
CLOSED HOSPITAL DRIVE.

! DO AND I AM SURE THE REST OF THE COUNCIL WISHES TO CO-OPERATE IN EVERY WAY
WITH THE UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS AND AM SYMPATHETIC TOWARDS THE PROBLEM OF STUDENTS
HAVING TO WALK IN AND ACROSS HcCoRMICK ROAD.

AS CHAIRMAN OF THESTREE'T COMMITTEE, I FEEL ! SHOULD BRING IT TO COUNCIL'S
ATTENTION THAT THE CLOSING OF THESE TWO STREETS TO THROUGH TRAFFIC GIVES ME GREAT
C~NCERN AND CREATES TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS.

THE FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT IS ADEQUATE FIRE PROTECTION TO THE UNIVERSITY
BUILDINGS.

AS I AM SURE YOU KNOW, THE UNIVERSITY PAYS THE CITY ~75.00 A YEAR FOR FIRE
PROTECTION. WITH THE STREETS BLOCKED OFF, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A CONSIDERABLE
DELAY 1N REACHING A FIRE AND IN THE ~ASE OF OUR LARGER EQUIPMENT, SOME OF THE TURNS

ARE PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO NEGOTIATE. WE HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED ONE CONSIDER-
DELAY
ABLE/ON HOSPITAL DRIVE AND HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE FIRE~EN' USING CUTTING SHEARS
