VOGT INTRODUCED~THE LANE HIGH.STUDENTS WHO ARE HOLDING CITY OFFICES AS PART <br /> <br />OF THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT WEEK PROGRAM.' <br /> <br /> A COMMUNICATION WAS PRESENTED FROM THE PETITIONERS REQUESTING WITHDRAWAL OF THEir <br />REQUEST FOR REZONING AT 1500 WESTWOOD ROAD. ON MOTION BY MR, RINEHART; SECONDED BY <br />MR. HAGGERTY~ THE FOREGOING REQUEST WAS APPROVED. <br /> A PUBLIC HEARING WAS HELD ON THIS DATE ON A PETITION TO REZONE 1014 AND 10t6 <br />ALTAV~STA AVENUE FROM R-2 RESIDENTIAL TO B-1 BUSINESS. A COMMUNICATION WAS PRESENTED <br />FROM THE PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDING THAT THE REQUEST BE DENIED. MR. DAVID R, <br />SELFE ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL IN SUPPORT OF THE PETITION~ AND MR, VICTOR WALLACE~ MR. <br />GILBERT STANLEY AND MR, A. L. GIANNINY SPOKE IN OPPOSITION, ON MOTION BY MR, VOGT~ <br />SECONDED BY MR. HAGGERTY; THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION WAS UNANIMOUSLY <br />ADOPTED. <br /> <br /> MR. LEWIS GLASER ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL AND REQUESTED THE COUNCIL TO SEEK AN <br /> <br />EXCEPTION TO THE SUNDAY BLUE LAWS TO PERMIT Him TO SELL QUILL PENS ON SUNDAY. THIS <br /> <br />MATTER WAS REFERRED TO THE CITY ATTORNEY FOR RECOMMENDATION. <br /> <br /> MR, PRESTON COINER INFORMED THE COUNCIL THAT HIS BUSINESS IS BEING DISPLACED BY <br /> <br />THE GARRETT STREET REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT~ AND JUNK YARDS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN ANY ZONING <br />CLASSIFICATION tN EITHER THE CITY OR COUNTY. MR. COINER STATED THAT HE HAS FOUND A <br />TRACT OF LAND ON TTH STREET~ S. W. SUITABLE FOR HIS BUSINESS~ AND REQUESTED THAT <br />CONSIDERATION BE GIVEN TO ALLOWING HIM TO LOCATE HIS BUSINESS AT THIS SITE. ON <br />MOTION BY MR, HAGGERTY~ SECONDED BY MR. MOUNT; THIS REQUEST WAS REFERRED TO THE PLANNING <br />COMMISSION FOR RECOMMENDATION. <br /> <br /> A REQUEST FOR UTILITIES TO SERVE THE PROPOSED FOUNTAIN COURT APARTMENTS ON Rio ROAD <br /> WAS REFERRED TO THE PLANNING COMMISSION FOR RECOMMENDATION. <br /> <br /> A REPORT WAS PRESENTED FROM THE STREET COMMITTEE RECOMMENDING THAT PARKING ON ~TH <br /> <br /> N. W. BE EXTENDED NORTHWARD TO A POINT APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET SOUTH OF IRVING STREET. ON <br /> MOTION BY MR, VOGT, SECONDED BY MR. MOUNT~ THE FOREGOING RECOMMENDATION WAS UNANIMOUSLY <br /> ADOPTED. <br /> <br /> A COMMUNICATION WAS PRESENTED FROM THE HOUSING AUTHORITY STATING THAT P. H. A. WILL <br /> NOT PARTICIPATE ~N CONSTRUCTION OF SW-IMMING POOLS IN HOUSING PROJECTS~ AND ADVISING THAT <br /> APPLICATION MAY BE MADE TO H. U. D, UNDER THE NEIGHBORHOOD FACILITIES PROGRAM FOR SUCH <br /> PROJECT, ON MOTION BY MR, MOUNT~ SECONDED BY MR. RINEHART~ THE HOUSING AUTHORITY WAS <br /> REQUESTED TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER THE NEIGHBORHOOD FACILITIES PROGRAM FOR THE <br /> GARRETT STREET PROJECT FOR COUNCIL'S CONSIDERATION. <br /> <br /> THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION-WAS PRESENTED FROM THE PLANNING COMMISSION: <br /> WHEREAS, THE CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY PLANNING COMMISSION HAS THOROUGHLY <br /> <br /> STUDIED THE MAJOR ARTERIAL STREET AND HIGHWAY PLAN AS PREPARED BY THE VIRGINIA <br /> <br /> DEPARTMENT OF H~GHWA¥S; AND <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ PUBLIC HEARINGS WERE HELD BY THE PLANNING COMMISSION ON <br /> <br /> OCTOBER 10, 1967 AND FEBRUARY T~ 1968, <br /> <br /> NOW~ THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDS <br /> <br /> TO THE CItY COUNCIL THAT THE MAJOR ARTERIAL STREET AND HIGHWAY PLAN BE APPROVED <br /> AS A PART OF THE COMPREHENSIVE CITY PLAN wITH THE PROVISO THAT THE VIRGINIA <br /> DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS BE REQUESTED TO RESTUDY: <br /> <br /> ]. THE GRADY-GORDON CORRIDOR TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT A BETTER LOCATION <br /> CAN BE FOUND FOR THIS STREET AND WHETHER OR NOT THE EXISTING STREETS <br /> CAN BE WIDENED TO ACCOMMODATE THE FUTURE TRAFFIC DEMANDS WITHOUT THE <br /> CONSTRUCTION OF THE GRADY-GORDON EXTENSION. <br /> <br /> ~.
