4 <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Dr. Brown, Mr. Halliday said the current computer <br />lab is 1,000 square feet. <br /> <br />Mr. O'Connell said direction is needed from Council about the next step. <br /> <br />Mr. Caravati said he wants to get moving. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he would like to give the public in attendance at the meeting an <br />opportunity to comment. <br /> <br /> Dr. Peyton Weary said there are over 8,000 children in the area without access to <br />dental care. He said he is looking for 4,000 to 5,000 square feet of space for a dental <br />clinic, and asked Council to keep this in mind as an alternative for Jefferson School. <br /> <br /> Mr. Kenneth Martin, a member of the Jefferson School Task Force, said it was <br />not in the Task Force report that the old part of Jefferson School was only for a cultural <br />center. <br /> <br /> Ms. Reeva Williams, representing the African-American Jefferson School Allies, <br />asked that the historical appearance of Jefferson School not be changed. She said it was <br />built by African-Americans and future uses should honor African-Americans. She said <br />there is no reason to have it privatized. She said it should be remain an African-American <br />public learning center. <br /> <br /> Ms. Anne Carter said we need to consider an official name and suggested the <br />African-American Heritage and Cultural Learning Center at Jefferson School. <br /> <br /> Ms. Nancy O'Brien, a member of the Task Force, said the Task Force had a long <br />discussion about the size of the cultural center and decided to leave the size blank. She <br />said the historic piece of Jefferson Should not be considered separately as all of it has <br />historic significance. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said he would be surprised if we start renovations in less than two <br />years. He said the building is now structurally sound and the windows have been fixed. <br />He asked if we can get use out of it during the next year. He said he appreciates hearing <br />about the children's dental center as that is missing in the City. He said we may also <br />want to consider a day care center for classes on site at Jefferson School. He said we <br />need to get an anchor tenant and then decide what to put around it. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown thanked Dr. Weary for bringing up the dental care issue. He said he <br />would like the City to help find a space for the center. He thanked members of the public <br />for the reminders of the importance of the structure. <br /> <br />The meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />President Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
