RANDOLPH PERRY AND MR. GILBERT CAMPBELL ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL ANO <br />INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AND <br />DEFENSE SYSTEM PRESENTED A RESOLUTION, WHICH THEY REQUESTED THE COUNCIL TO ADOPT, APPROVING <br />LOCATION OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AND DEFENSE SYSTEM IN VIRGINIA. ON MOTION BY <br />MR. WEINBERG, SECONDED BY MR. COLEMAN, THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS UNANIMOUSLY <br />ADOPTED: <br />WHEREAS, THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS, THE VIRGINIA STATE HIGHWAY <br />DEPARTMENT AND THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, AFTER YEARS OF STUDY <br />AND ACTING UPON DISINTERESTED EXPERT ADVICE OF EXPERIENCED ENGINEERS, NAVE <br />DECIDED UPON AND DESIGNATED THE INTER8TATE HIGHWAYS AND THEIR LOCATIONS IN <br />VIRGINIA WHICH MILL BECOME A PART OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AND DEFENSE SYSTEM <br />OF THE UNITED STATES, AND, <br />RESOLUTION RE: LOCATION OF WHEREAS, THE EAST-WEST HIGHWAY DESIGNATED TO BECOME A PART OF THIS SYSTEM <br />INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AND <br />DEFENSE SYSTEM IS U. S. ROUTE 25O FROM RICHMOND TO ITS INTERSECTION AT STAUNTON WITH U.S. <br />ROUTE 11, A NORTH-SOUTH HIGHWAY ALSO DESIGNATED TO BECOME A PART OF THE INTER- <br />STATE HIGHWAY AND DEFENSE SYSTEM: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY rHE COUNCIL of THE CITY of CHARLOTTES- <br />ViLLE AS FOLLOWS: <br />WE CONCUR IN THE DECISION OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS, THE <br />VIRGINIA STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT AND THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, THAT THE <br />INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM WEST FROM RICHMOND SHALL BE LOCATED ALONG THE <br />PRESENT U. S. ROUTE Z5O TO A POINT OF INTERSECTION WITH U. S. ROUTE 11 AT THE <br />CITY OF STAUNTON, VIRGINIA, AND WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THIS LOCATION OF THIS <br />INTERSTATE FOUR LANE HIGHWAY WILL FULLY MEET THE BASIC PURPOSES AND OBJECTIVES <br />OF THE FEDERAL INTERSTATE HIGHWAY ANO DEFENSE SYSTEM FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: <br />1. A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY WEST FROM RICHMOND ALONG U. S. ROUTE 25O TO <br />STAUNTON WILL ASSURE ESSENTIAL ACCESS TO NUMEROUS IMPORTANT OFFENSE INDUSTRIES <br />IN AND NEAR CHARLOTTESVILLE, WAYNESBORO ANO STAUNTON. <br />Z. A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY WEST FROM RICHMOND ALONG U. $. ROUTE 25O WILL <br />PROVIDE THE MOST ACCESSIBLE, MOST DIRECT ANO SHORTEST ROUTE INTO THE INTERIOR <br />FROM THE HEAVILY POPULATED AND HIGHLY INDUSTRIALIZED DEFENSE AREAS OF EASTERN <br />AND TIDEWATER, VIRGINIA. <br />3. U. S. ROUTE 25O IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE NATION'S CAPITAL TO FACILITATE <br />DEFENSE AND EVACUATION MOVEMENTS IN AN EMERGENCY. <br />4. THE CONSIDERED RECOMMENDATIONS OF DISINTERESTED ENGINEERS EMPLOYED TO <br />SELECT THE BEST ROUTES FOR THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AND DEFENSE SYSTEM IN <br />VIRGINIA SHOULD BE ADOPTED iN ORDER TO PREVENT THE ENTIRE PROGRAM FROM DISINTE- <br />GRATING INTO A POLITICAL CONFLICT OF SECTIONAL INTERESTS. <br />PETITION RE: MULBERRY AVE. A PETITION FOR SIDEWALK FROM SOME OF THE RESIDENTS OF MULBERRY AVENUE WAS <br />REFERRED TO STREET COi1M. <br />AND CITY ATTORNEY REFERRED TO THE STREET COMMITTEE AND CITY ATTORNEY FOR STUDY AND REPORT. <br />
