<br /> 81 <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED <br />by the City Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia, that the City Manager is hereby authorized to execute on behalf of the <br />City the following document, in a form approved by the City Attorney: <br /> <br />Lease between the City of Charlottesville and THE CHARLOTTESVILLE- <br />ALBEMARLE RESCUE SQUAD, INCORPORATED, for approximately 3,600 <br />square feet of premises located near the intersection of the Route 250 bypass and <br />McIntire Road. <br /> <br />REPORT <br />: SCHOOLS SUMMER PROGRAM COLLABORATION <br /> <br /> Mr. Mike Svetz, Director of Parks and Recreation, said that last year staff was <br />asked how the Summer Program could be improved. He said Parks and Recreation staff <br />realized that a partner was needed, and they have partnered with the CLAS/S Program in <br />offering a different type of camp experience, Camp ExL which will provide formal and <br />information remediation as well as extended learning opportunities. He said the costs <br />will be kept the same. He said Housing Authority sites are being targeted. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton applauded staff for their creative look at the issue. She said it <br />appears to only cover elementary age kids, and expressed concern about middle and high <br />school populations. <br /> <br />ththth <br /> Mr. Svetz said there is a separate pre-teen camp for 5, 6 and 7 graders and a <br />teen camp as well. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton said the transportation component from Housing Authority sites is <br />great, and asked if it is also provided from Friendship Court and Blue Ridge Commons, <br />and Mr. Svetz said yes. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton asked how outcomes will be tracked, and Mr. Svetz said that <br />measuring sticks will be developed when kids are identified. He said the program does <br />not want to take away from fun and nutrition. <br /> <br /> Ms. Kathy Dowd, CLAS/S program coordinator, said the program will include <br />educational enrichment and recreation and there will be pre and post tests. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton asked if there will be follow up with the kids throughout the school <br />year. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daphne Keiser, Principal of Burnley Moran Elementary School, said that this <br />will be an extension of the school program and an assessment will be done during the <br />summer. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Caravati about the target of 300 spaces, Mr. <br />Svetz said that plus or minus 60 kids per site is proposed, but they can go over that <br />number within reason. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he is pleased with the initiative. He requested that Council be <br />invited to visit the program. He said he hopes staff will also think about specific <br />initiatives to address middle school issues <br /> <br />REPORT <br />: REGION TEN COMMUNITY SERVICES BOARD MEWS PROJECT <br />(LITTLE HIGH STREET) <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati disclosed that he lives across the street from this proposed project, <br />but feels that he can make an objective decision and not be influenced by his personal <br />situation. <br /> <br /> Ms. Susan Garrett, Region Ten board member, said she knows first hand the need <br />for this housing project which will house good people who will have been screened. She <br />said Region Ten owns many housing units for its clients and they have received no <br />complaints about them. She said Board members assure that Region Ten will work with <br /> <br /> <br />
