NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Monday, August 7, 2006 AT 6:15 p.m. IN THE Second Floor Conference Room. THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: Closed session as provided by Section 2.2-3712 of the Virginia Code BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR BY Jeanne Cox SECOND FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM – August 7, 2006 Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: Dr. Brown, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. Absent: Ms. Hamilton. On motion by Mr. Norris, seconded by Mr. Lynch, Council voted to meet in closed session for discussion and consideration of prospective candidates for appointment to City boards and commissions by the following vote. Ayes: Dr. Brown, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. Noes: None. Absent: Ms. Hamilton. On motion by Mr. Taliaferro, seconded by Mr. Lynch, Council certified by the following vote (Ayes: Dr. Brown, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. Noes: None. Absent: Ms. Hamilton) that to the best of each Council Member's knowledge, only public business matters lawfully exempted from the open meeting requirements of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act and identified in the motion convening the closed session were heard, discussed or considered in the closed session. COUNCIL CHAMBER – August 7, 2006 Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Dr. Brown, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. Absent: Ms. Hamilton. ANNOUNCEMENTS Dr. Brown said he will bring up funding for the new youth football league during other business. Mr. Norris announced that there will be a “meet and greet” for School Superintendent Rosa Atkins at Westhaven on August 9th. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS : WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY Dr. Brown displayed a “COOL Cities” award presented to the City by the Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club and the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice. Dr. Brown said he has replaced Mr. Lynch on the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission, and they asked that Mr. Lynch be presented a letter of appreciation and a gift for his service. Dr. Brown said Mr. Lynch has been a workhorse on Council and is always prepared. Dr. Brown proclaimed August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. PUBLIC Ms. Vanthi Nguyen, 1166 Little High Street, asked that Council take a stand against Dominion Virginia Power’s plan to build two new nuclear reactors at Lake Anna. She presented petitions with 581 signatures supporting the unneeded, expensive and dangerous power.
