7 <br />WHEREAS, <br />the LCEC has applied for $300,000.00 in Transportation <br />Enhancement Funds from the Virginia Department of Transportation which, when <br />combined with other grant funds, will be used to construct a 2,500 square foot visitor’s <br />center, develop a system of interpretive hiking trails, and create a ferry boat crossing to <br />allow pedestrian passage across the Rivanna River to the greenbelt trails in Pen Park; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br />this Council strongly supports the educational mission of the Lewis <br />and Clark Exploratory Center, and values the LCEC as an important community <br />resource; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED <br /> that the City Council for the City of Charlottesville strongly <br />supports the grant application made by the Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center of <br />Virginia for $300,000.00 in Transportation Enhancement Funds from the Virginia <br />Department of Transportation. <br /> <br />RESOLUTIONS <br />g. : Authorizing Grant Applications for Buford/Venable <br /> Schools <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, the Department of Transportation has initiated a Safe Routes to School <br />program to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school safely; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, the City of Charlottesville intends to provide safe pedestrian facilities, <br />especially along and across major streets and near schools and recreation facilities; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, Buford Middle School has a Safe Routes to School Plan ready for <br />adoption; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, Buford Middle School is attended by every student in the system for <br />grades 5 and 6 and is the site of the Smith Recreation Center shared by the Boys and <br />Girls Club; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, this program requires no local match money; now, therefore, <br /> <br />Be It Resolved <br /> by the Council for the City of Charlottesville that the City of <br />Charlottesville endorses an application to the Virginia Department of Transportation for <br />Safe Routes to School funding to make infrastructure improvements to the streets around <br />Buford Middle School to improve the safety of those walking and biking to school. <br /> <br />Be It Further Resolved <br /> that the City of Charlottesville accepts the responsibility <br />of maintenance of the proposed infrastructure in perpetuity. <br /> <br />* * * <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, the Department of Transportation has initiated a Safe Routes to School <br />program to enable and encourage children to walk and bicycle to school safely; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, the City of Charlottesville intends to provide safe pedestrian facilities, <br />especially along and across major streets and near schools and recreation facilities; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, Venable Elementary School recently benefited from a new point of <br />access from the south when an old fence was opened up, and a walkway to the school <br />will complete this new link; and <br /> <br />Whereas <br />, this program requires no local match money; now, therefore, <br /> <br />Be It Resolved <br /> that the City of Charlottesville endorses an application to the <br />Virginia Department of Transportation for Safe Routes to School funding to build a <br />walking/biking trail to Venable Elementary School to improve the safety of those <br />walking and biking to school. <br /> <br />Be It Further Resolved <br /> that the City of Charlottesville accepts the responsibility <br />of maintenance of the proposed infrastructure in perpetuity. <br /> <br /> <br />
