<br />COUNCIL CHAMBER – February 20, 2007 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: <br />Dr. Brown, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. Absent: Ms. Hamilton. <br /> <br />ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown announced that the report on voting precincts is being deferred <br />because the report is not complete and the report on the sister city sculpture is being <br />deferred due to the absence of Ms. Hamilton because of her artistic background. <br /> <br /> Mr. Norris said there will be a public workshop on Places 29 on February 26, and <br />he encouraged the public to attend. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said he will report on the meeting of the School CIP Committee during <br />other business. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he will bring up Mayors for Peace during other business. <br /> <br />AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS <br />: GFOA DISTINGUISHED BUDGET AWARD; GAS <br />SAFETY AWARENESS DAY <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown presented the Gas Safety Awareness Day Proclamation to D. J. Manafi <br />and Irene Peterson in the Public Works Department. Mr. Manafi said a major education <br />program will be done to promote gas safety. Ms. Peterson said that a contest is being <br />held to name the gas safety mascot. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown presented the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished <br />Budget Award to Ryan Davidson, Leslie Beauregard, and Aubrey Watts, and said this is <br />th <br />the City’s 15 year receiving the award. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Ms. Martha Levering, 712 Grove Avenue, representing the League of Women <br />Voters Natural Resources Committee, announced a global warming program to be held <br />by the League. <br /> <br /> Ms. Vanthi Nguyen, 1116 Little High Street, representing the People’s Alliance <br />for Clean Energy, discussed nuclearism, the unquestioning acceptance of nuclear power. <br /> <br /> Ms. Rebecca Ferris, Keswick, said there is the potential for complete planetary <br />destruction with nuclear power. She said we should instead turn to wind and solar power. <br />She invited Council to call NRC and ask what happens in the event of a meltdown at <br />Lake Anna. She said Charlottesville is in the impact area of the nuclear reactor at Lake <br />Anna. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jennifer Connor, 1116 Little High Street, encouraged Council to oppose the <br />proposed nuclear reactors and continue guardianship of our community’s health. She <br />said there is now a streamlined process to get the reactors through, and the reactors will <br />potentially supply energy to 12 states. <br /> <br /> Ms. Elena Day, Buckingham Circle, representing the People’s Alliance for Clean <br />Energy, said we should commit to energy conservation and efficiency and as publicly <br />elected officials should oppose the reactors and call our state legislators. Ms. Day said <br />that California has been extremely successful in conserving energy. <br /> <br />th <br /> Mr. John Gaines, 214 9 Street, N.W., a member of the WCEH Neighborhood <br />Association, said he has a wish list as follows: 1) give more attention to the crosswalk at <br />th <br />10 and Page and put up flags or warnings; 2) get the street light back on in front of <br />Settle Tire; 3) lower the tax rate so people can continue to live in this world class city; 4) <br />th <br />give more attention to the intersection at 8 Street, N.W. and Main Street; and 5) do a <br />better snow removal job in predominantly African-American neighborhoods. <br /> <br /> <br />
