4 <br />DR. S. D. STURKIE OF THE JOINT HEALTH DEPARTMENT ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL <br />REQUEST FOR APPROPRIATION <br />FOR DRUGS FOR MEDICALLY <br />INDIGENT PATIENTS. <br />AND REQUESTED AN APPROPRIATION FOR STREPTOMYCIN AND OTHER DRUGS FOR MEDICALLY <br />INDIGENT TUBERCULOSIS PATIENTS. THE CITY MANAGER ADVISED THE COUNCIL THAT A <br />SUFFICIENT AMOUNT WAS INCLUDED IN THE BUDGET, UNDER CARE FOR TUBERCULOSIS <br />PATIENTS, TO COVER THIS EXPENSE IF IT WAS THEIR DESIRE TO USE IT FOR THIS <br />PURPOSE. A MOTION 8Y MR. WEINBERG, SECONDED BY MR. FORGES, THAT THE <br />FOREGOING REQUEST BE APPROVED WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. DR. STURKIE ALSO <br />REQUESTED AN APPROPRIATION FOR A FULL TIME DENTIST ANO ONE ASSISTANT FOR <br />THE CITY DENTAL CLINIC. AFTER A LENGHTY DISCUSSION, A MOTION BY MR. WEINBERG, <br />SECONDED BY MR. FORGES, SHAT THE ALBEMARLE DENTAL SOCIETY BE REQUESTED TO MEET <br />WITH THE COUNCIL TO DISCUSS THE DENTAL CLINIC WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br />MR. LOUIE SCRIBNER, MEMBER OF THE BUILDING CODE REVIEW BOARD, ADDRESSED <br />MATTER RE: PROPOSED <br />CHANGES IN BUILDING CODE. <br />THE COUNCIL AND PRESENTED SOME PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE CITY BUILDING LODE. <br />A MOTION BY MR. FORGES, SECONDED BY MR. WEINBERG, THAT THESE CHANGES BE TAKEN <br />UNDER ADVISEMENT FOR STUDY AND CONSIDERATION WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br />ON NOTION BY MR. WEINBERG, SECONDED BY MR. FORGES, A COUNTY WATER APPLICATION <br />COUNTY WATER APPLICATION <br />WAS APPROVED FOR: <br />W, W. ALEXANDER LOCUST AVENUE, EXTD• <br />THE PETITION CALLING FOR A STUDY OF A HOUSING CODE GOVERNING MINIMUM <br />MATTER RE: HOUSING CODE <br />MAYOR TO APPOINT COMMITTEE <br />STANDARDS FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY WHICH WAS PRESENTED AT THE LAST COUNCIL <br />MEETING, WAS AGAIN CON9IDER£D. A MOTION BY MR. FORBE$, SECONDED BY MR. WEINBERG, <br />THAT THE MAYOR APPOINT A COMMITTEE CONSISTING OF ONE COUNCILMAN, THE HEALTH <br />OFFICER, THE BUILDING INSPECTOR AND ANY OTHER PERSONS THE MAYOR MAY DESIRE, <br />TO STUDY AND RECOMMEND A HOUSING CODE WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED, <br />A COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM MR. L. W. WOOD, COMMONWEALTHS ATTORNEYf <br />MATTER RE: SPECIFIC <br />DIRECTIONS ON DOGS <br />CALLING ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT THE GAME WARDEN HAS NO SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS <br />CONCERNING THE CUSTODY OR DISPOSITION OF DOGS KNOWN OR SUSPECTED OF HAVING <br />BITTEN SOME ONE AND SUGGESTING THAT SOME DEFINITE ORDINANCE BE ADOPTED. THIS <br />WAS REFERRED TO THE CITY ATTORNEY FOR STUDY AND RECOMMENDATION. <br />ON MOTION BY f'IR. WEINBERG, SECONDED BY FIR. FORGES, THE FOLLOWING REPORT <br />WAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED: <br />APRIL 15, 1954 <br />REPORT RE: <br />WARE S~REET <br />TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL <br />CITY ,OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA <br />GENTLEMEN: <br />ON APRIL 6, 1953 THE COUNCIL ADOPTED A RESOLUTION STATING THAT THE <br />CITY WOULD CONSTRUCT A SIDEWALK ON THE EAST SIDE OF WARE STREET, BETWEEN <br />GARRETT STREET AND THE IX PLANT, PROVIDED THE PROPERTY OWNERS ON THE EAST <br />SIDE OF THE STREET WOULD DONATE TO THE CITY FOR STREET PURPOSES FIVE (5) <br />FEET OF LAND. TWO OF THE PROPERTY OWNERS, WHO OWN EIGHT (8~ OF THE <br />PROPERTIES ON THAT SIDE OF THE STREET ARE UNWILLING TO DONATE OR SELL <br />FIVE (5) FEET OF THEIR PROPERTY TO THE CITY FOR STREET PURPOSES. <br />IN VIEW OF THE PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR TRAFFIC IN THIS AREA <br />CAUSED BY THE TWO MANUFACTURING PLANTS, WE REC,OMMENO A5 FOLLOWS: <br />1. THAT PARKING BE PROHIBITED ON BOTH SIDES OF WARE STREET <br />FROM GARRETT STREET TO IX MILL• <br />2. THAT THE CITY CONSTRUCT AT ITS OWN EXPENSE A SIDEWALK ON <br />THE WEST SIDE OF WARE STREET, PROVIDED THE ALBEMARLE <br />WEAVING COMPANY WILL REMOVE AND REBUILD, IF NECESSARY, <br />THEIR RAMP WHICH FACES ON WARE STREET, <br />3~ THAT THE CITY MAKE OPENINGS IN THE CURB FOR DRIVEWAY <br />ENTRANCES ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE STREET FOR ANY <br />PROPERTY OWNER SO REQUESTING SUCH OPf_NING. <br />RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, <br />~QI~R._W E.1~ E.BSi.~.~15~.~1~8.). <br />
