MICHIE, MAYOR
AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF CHARLOTTESVILLE
GENTLEMEN:
LETTER OF RESIGNATION -
CITY ATTY. EFFECTIVE AS YOU KNOW FROM PREVIOUS INFORMAL DISCUSSIONS, I HAVE, FOR
MARCH 1, 1959 SOME TIME, FOUND THAT THE IEGAI WORK OF THE CITY REQUIRES A
LARGER EXPENDITURE OF TIME THAN I AM ABLE TO GIVE IN VIEW OF THE
OTHER WORK I HAVE TO HANDLE FOR MY LAW FIRM. THE LEGAL WORK OF
THE CITY IS OF SUCH GREAT IMPORTANCE THAT I FEEL NO ONE SHOULD
OCCUPY THE POSITION OF CITY ATTORNEY UNLESS HE HAS THE TIME TO
GIVE IT PROMPT AND THOROUGH ATTENTION ON ALL OCCASIONS. THIS HAS
BEEN DIFFICULT FOR ME TO 00 FOR A CONSIDERABLE PERIOD OF TIME,
AND I THINK THAT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CITY, ( SHOULD
TENDER MY RESIGNATION AS CITY ATTORNEY.
DURING THE TIME THAT I HAVE HELD THIS POSITION, THE WORK AND
WONDERFUL ASSOCIATIONS WITH YOU, PREVIOUS COUNCILMAN, AND CITY
EMPLOYEES HAS BEEN MOST REWARDING, AND I CERTAINLY TAKE THIS
STEP WITH GREAT RELUCTANCE AND A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF SADNESS
KNOWING FULL WELL THAT I WILL DEEPLY MISS WORKING WITH ALL OF
YOU. YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE POSTPONED THIS ACTION UNTIL WE REACHED
A POINT WHERE MY WORK COULD BE EASILY TURNED OVER TO A SUCCESSOR,
AND I FEEL THAT THAT NOW CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH LITTLE OR NO
DIFFICULTY.
THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS ASKED ME TO CONTINUE TO
REPRESENT THE BOARD IN THE SCHOOL CASE, AND THAT I SHALL BE GLAD
TO DO, AND TO ASSIST IN ANY OTHER WAY POSSIBLE UNTIL THE PRESENT
SCHOOL LITIGATION IS FINALLY TERMINATED.
WISHING ALL OF YOU THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF SUCCESS IN YOUR
CONTINUED EFFORTS TO SERVE THE CITY, I AM
RESPECTFULLY YOURS,
JOHN S. BATTLE, JR. ~SIGNED~
JOHN S. BATTLE, JR.
JSB, JR.:NLC
A MOTION BY MR. SCRIBNER, SECONDED BY MR. DAM S, THAT MR.
