OF THE VALUABLE RECORD BOOKS IN HIS OFFICE. ON MOTION BY MR. SCRIBNER, SECONDED BY MR. <br />RENOVATING BOOKS IN <br />CLERKS OFFICE COLEMAN, THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS ADOPTED BY THE FOLLOWING RECORDED VOTE: AYES: MR. <br />COLEMAN, MR. DAVIS, MR. MICHIE, MR. SCRIBNER AND MR. WEINBERG• NOES: NONE. <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE <br />THAT $1,100.00 OR AS MUCH THEREOF AS MAY BE NECESSARY BE AND THE <br />APPROPRIATION - <br />RENDYATING BOOKS IN SAME IS HEREBY APPROPRIATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOREGOING REQUEST. <br />CLERKS OFFICE <br />THE FOLLOWING REPORT OF 7HE CITY MANAGER WAS PRESENTED: <br />JULY 15, 1960 <br />TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL <br />CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA <br />GENTLEMEN: <br />WITH REFERENCE TO THE PETITION SIGNED BY MEMBERS OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />REQUESTING THAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL BE REDUCED TO A FIVE DAY WORK <br />WEEK WITHOUT A REDUCTION IN COMPENSATION, I WISH TO REPORT AS FOLLOWS: <br />(1) IN ORDER TO GRANT THIS REQUEST AND PROVIDE THE SAME POLICE <br />PROTECTION AS IS NOW PROVIDED, iT WILL BE NECESSARY TO EMPLOY <br />NINE (9) ADDITIONAL POLICE OFFICERS. <br />REPORT RE: ~IYE DAY <br />WORK WEEK FOR POLICE DEPT. (2) THE ANNUAL COST OF THE SALARIES, UNIFORMS, AND OTHER EXPENSES <br />OF NINE (9) POLICE OFFICERS WOULD AMOUNT TO APPROXIMATELY <br />$37,500.00 FOR THE FIRST YEAR AND WOULD INCREASE APPROXIMATELY <br />$1,100.00 EACH YEAR FOR FIVE YEARS, SO THAT BEGINNING WITH <br />TWE SIXTH YEAR THE ANNUAL COST WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $42,500.00, <br />PROVIDED NO ADDITIONAL SALARY INCREASES ARE GRANTED. <br />(3) A LEAGUE OF VIRGINIA MUNICIPALITIES REPORT COVERING 33 VIRGINIA <br />CITIES, DATED APRIL, 1960, SNOWS THE FOLLOWING: <br />IN 24 CITIES POLICE WORK 6 DAYS PER WEEK, <br />IN 3 CITIES POLICE WORK 5~ DAYS PER WEEK <br />IN 6 CITIES POLICE WORK 5 DAYS PER WEEK <br />TWO OF THE CITIES WHICH WORK 5 GAYS PER WEEK, WORK MORE THAN 8 <br />HOURS PER DAY ~COVINGTON - 10 HRS. AND WINCHESTER - $~ HOURS. <br />IN VIEW OF THE AODITtONAI EXPENDITURE REQUIRED, THE PROBLEM OF SECURING AND <br />TRAINING NINE ADDITIONAL POLICE OFFICERS AND, THE EFFECT THIS CHANGE MIGHT HAVE <br />ON THE FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL, I RECOMMEND THAT THE MATTER BE CARRIED OVER <br />AND CONSi0ERE0 AT THE TIME THE 1961-62 BUDGET IS BEING PREPARED. AT THAT TIME <br />NOT ONLY SHOULD THE REQUEST BE CONSIDERED BUT OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS SALARIES, <br />WORKING CONDITIONS, ETC., SHOULD ALSO BE STUDIED AND DETERMINED. <br />RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, <br />JAS. WEINBERG, SECONDED BY MR. DAVIS, THAT THE MAYOR APPOINT A <br />BY MAYOR TO STUDY <br />REPORT - POLICE DEPT. COMMITTEE TO STUDY TWIS MATTER WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. THE MAYOR APPOINTED MR. COLEMAN, <br />MR. WEINBERG AND MR. DAVIS TO THIS COMMITTEE. <br />~N MOTION BY MR. SCRIBNER, SECONDED BY MR.
