2
?

No one is turned away from the YMCA because of inability to pay. There is
diversity in current YMCA participants. Public transportation is a key issue and a
central location is needed.
?

McIntire Park is not in an underprivileged area. The goal should be to not have
YMCAs compete with for-profit organizations
?

For-profit organizations have notoriously tried to prevent YMCA’s from being
located in localities.
?

There is a need for handicapped facilities. Money should be allocated for lifts at
pools.
?

Programs for teenagers are not available in Charlottesville. A YMCA in McIntire
Park would be accessible to Charlottesville High School students. The YMCA is
the community’s best bet at this point.
?

Swim meets at Washington Park pool limit use by kids.
?

Recreational facilities are needed in neighborhoods to serve low income children.
?

The YMCA welcomes all people. Transportation needs a solution.
?

Neighborhoods would be served better if the YMCA is not located at PVCC.
?

The whole focus should be on w hat is in the best interest of kids.
?

When, where and how was this meeting advertised.
?

A diverse group of kids is involved in YMCA programs.
?

The major barrier to swim programs is facilities. The YMCA is an honest partner.
The Carver site is the best location. Partnering with the YMCA frees up City
money to revitalize programs and facilities in neighborhoods.
?

Building a central facility with the YMCA frees up money for the City to do
more. A location other than PVCC would be better for more diversity.
?

A YMCA facility will be good for the City. YMCAs build better communities. It
is not a question of whether to build a YMCA facility, it is a question of where.
McIntire Park is the best site. A YMCA is long overdue in this community.

Dr. Brown thanked the public for coming and for their comments. He said the
issue is really about meeting the needs of kids. He said he is skeptical about whether any
type of central facility will meet the needs we have. He said transportation is also an
issue. He said he wants to keep an open mind, and suggested that a road trip be taken to
see what kids and neighborhoods are being served by YMCAs in other communities. He
said perhaps we need to look at a bigger package. He said if we save money by
partnering with the YMCA, what would we do with what is saved. He said he is not
attracted to the McIntire Park sites except for the one closest to CHS. He said he could
also favor the Carver site if welcomed by the Jefferson School alumni. He said there are
a lot of questions yet unanswered.

Mr. Norris echoed much of what Dr. Brown said. He said the question is can we
do both the YMCA and revive recreation programs and get kids back in the parks. He
said he thinks we can do both and would prefer that the YMCA be located in the City
rather than PVCC.

Mr. Lynch said the question is where to go next. He said we need to address what
we do with the pools. He said he thinks the focus should be on Buford, and if we can
partner with the YMCA for a facility on that site it would be great. He said Smith and
Crow pools are at the end of their lives. He said we should close Crow and rebuild Smith
with the Boys and Girls Club, and hopefully with the YMCA as well.

Dr. Brown said that Council will hold a work session to come up with a specific
program proposal.

Mr. Ray Carey, a member of the Jefferson School Managing Partners, said that
there should be a discussion with the Managing Partners before moving forward.

The meeting was adjourned.

_____________________________ ____________________________
President Clerk
