2
Ms. Ivory said professional learning is built into all schools to address those
challenges. She said differential development is also being provided to teachers based on
their skills.

Mr. Taliaferro thanked the Schools for raising the bar and delivering positive
results.

Ms. Atkins said that the School goal was to have all schools accredited by the fall
of 2009, and she is pleased to announce that they will all be accredited this year.

Dr. Brown referred to an article in the Daily Progress about the high turnover of
teachers and new hires, and asked if there are any particular schools that had higher
turnover.

Ms. Peggy Van Yahres, School Board member, said that the high number of
retirements this year was due to the incentive package offered for this year only.

Ms. Atkins said that the turnover is comparable to other divisions.

Mr. Charles Kollmansperger, School Board member, said that as a former teacher
he really believes the system nreds to do a better job supporting good teachers. He said
the School’s Strategic Plan hinges on recruiting and retaining good teachers.

Ms. Hamilton asked how the Schools are measuring and rewarding teachers.

Ms. Atkins said that the community and teacher survey results showed a need to
support teachers. She said administration is committed to meet with department chairs to
talk and hear from them, and to get more information and specificity about what would
help them. For instance, she said that they have talked about having a dedicated space in
the building for exercise for teachers.

Ms. Hamilton said the exercise room is a nice idea, but at higher levels teachers
like money and release time.

Ms. Atkins said when teachers are not in the classroom students are not receiving
the same level of teaching.

Dr. Edwards encouraged Councilors to attend the upcoming Leaders for Success
Conference.

The meeting was adjourned.

______________________________ ____________________________
President Clerk
