COUNCIL CHAMBER – May 18, 2009 Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Dr. Brown, Ms. Edwards, Mr. Huja, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. ANNOUNCEMENTS th Mr. Norris said that Farmers in Meade Park will begin on June 10, summer pool passes are on sale, and Council will hold a work session on the efficiency study on May 20. Ms. Edwards said last week was Bike Week, and she encouraged citizens to engage in new exercises. She announced the end of year ceremony for Buford School. Mr. Huja added the action planning schedule to other business. Ms. Edwards said she will give an update of the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority meeting during other business. TH AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS : VIRGINIA DISCOVERY MUSEUM 20 ANNIVERSARY Mr. O’Connell said the City has once again been awarded AAA bond rating. Ms. Peppy Linden, Director of the Virginia Discovery Museum, said the Museum th is celebrating its 20 year. PUBLIC th Mr. John Gaines, 214 9 Street, N.W., thanked Mr. Taliaferro for his involvement th in 10 and Page Street issues, for serving as a partner on Jefferson School, and for recognizing the serious local drop-out rate of African-American students. rd Ms. Dotty Cappellino, 103 3 Street, N.E. co-owner of Cappellino’s Crazy Cakes, spoke on behalf of merchants on side streets, and said visibility is important to their success. She said she hopes signage will be allowed to the side street businesses, and that communication between the City and merchants be kept open. st Ms. Susan Sorbello, 101 and 105 E. Water Street and 100 South 1 Street, owner of Camillias and Main Street Bridal, said she paid $750 for signs and a permit and the signs are now down. She said she understands the requirement for disability compliance, but asked the City to work with side street merchants. th Ms. Nora Ayala, 103 5 Street, S.E., suggested that bike racks or planters be installed under side street signs to make them ADA compliant. Mr. Frank Cappellino, co-owner of Cappellino’s Crazy Cakes, said the main concern is signs as his business has been down since the signs have been gone. He asked Council to take a look at the issue as soon as possible and let merchants know what the design is going to be for future signs. Ms. Jaclynn Dunkle, owner of Fellini’s #9 at 200 E. Market Street, said signage on the mall is necessary for side street merchants. th Ms. Elizabeth Kurka, owner of The Cat House at 102 5 Street, S.E., said she desperately needs signage on the mall as well as sandwich boards. She said there are also issues with trash on the mall. Mr. Lowell Brown, Palmyra, representing 100 Black Men of Central Virginia, invited Council to their inaugural event and asked for support for future initiatives to support African American students.
