The question needing to be asked is what takes parents’ attention away from their children’s
education, and address those needs (health care, day care, etc.).

Ms. Edwards questioned the relationship between the Schools and other service
providers. School staff replied that Schools work with many agencies who serve children and
agencies regularly get grants specifically to serve school children.

Ms. Edwards asked how much training teachers get on cultural differences. Ms. Ivory
said some training is provided for school leaders and some to teachers. However, sometimes
people are not comfortable with the task of dealing with cultural differences and perhaps skilled
facilitators are needed to really address the problem.

Mr. Huja commented on the value of mentoring and tutoring efforts. School staff agreed
and talked about the various mentoring/tutoring programs in place and how adult black male role
models are needed as mentors and tutors.

Ms. Edwards offered the Race Dialogue Panel as a good example of disseminating
information on the history of discrimination in Charlottesville. Dr. McCullough praised the
recent bus tour of City schools she and other teachers took as extremely valuable on that topic.
There are also various educational programs for students and written materials given to teachers.

There was some discussion on having students take the SOL tests on-line so that the
results would be immediately available to students and teachers. Mr. Michie stated that testing is
done throughout the year to monitor students’ progress, but they are moving toward on-line
testing.

Mr. Michie adjourned the meeting at 1:00 p.m.

_______________________________ _____________________________
President Clerk
