180 <br /> <br />Ms. Slaughter suggested that the specific criteria be narrowed down. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Vandever, seconded by Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Gary O'Connelt ~vas <br />unanimously named Acting City Manager effective June 1, 1995. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty suggested that the Center for Public Service be asked to contact Deans <br />of Schools of Public Administration to solicit their advice on good candidates. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano asked for Council's view of the salary range by Thursday. Mr. Toscano <br />asked whether a Councilor should be involved in the original screening process. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she hoped that the Cooper Center alone could be used for the <br />original screening. <br /> <br /> Ms. Daugherty stated that she would prefer that the screening committee provide <br />30 to 35 candidates for Council's consideration, but other Councilors stated they would <br />prefer to have the number narrowed down to 20. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano asked Councilors if they are interested in appropriating any money if the <br />Cooper Center feels the need for any consulting help, or if Council would like to have a <br />member of the private business community participate in the screening process in light of the <br />fact that the Center has never conducted this type of search and since those involved have an <br />academic background. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she trusts that the Cooper Center will be able to do the <br />advertising and screening alone, but she thinks it would be fine to involve someone from the <br />private sector. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano stated that he will plan to talk to the Weldon Center further about the <br />process and Rev. Edwards stated that he would like another Council Me,fiber to accompany <br />Mr. Toscano when he does so. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Ms. Elizabeth Crabtree, a teacher at Clark School, thanked businesses for their help in <br />the recent Clark School Extravaganza and thanked Councilors for attending. Ms. Crabtree <br />endorsed Linda Bowen for the School Board. <br /> <br /> Mr. David Willis stated that the Ridge Street Neighborhood Association would like to <br />be involved in the City Manager selection process. <br /> <br />OTHER BUSINESS <br /> <br /> Mr. Vandever stated that he has received indications that the State Board of <br />Corrections would look favorably on providing funding for an intake center, renovations and <br />ADA improvements at the jail, as opposed to previous indications that such changes would <br />not be approved without the larger jail expansion. Mr. Vandever requested that Council <br />support the resolution to submit to Albemarle County and the Jail Board asking them to <br />move forward with those improvements. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Rev. Edwards, the resolution requesting the <br />Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and Jail Board to join with the City in seeking state <br />approval and funding for the proposed renovation project for the Joint Security Complex was <br />unanimously approved by Council. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Rev. Edwards, Council unanimously voted <br />to meet in executive session for the purpose of appointing members to various City boards or <br />agencies, and discussion of personnel matters, and for the purpose of considering the <br />acquisition or use of real property for public purpose, or the disposition of publicly held <br /> <br /> <br />
