Carroll Sm_ith, Watson Avenue, a member of the 29th Veterans Division, reviewed <br />plans for visitors from Normandy on October 6th: Col Sm~t__ stated that he hope.q the Mayor <br />and Council ca~_ meet. with the visitors and that. the amphitheater can be used by the group. <br /> <br /> Mr. John_ Bunch, representing the Char!o~esviile-Albemarle Bicycli~ Association, <br />presented two requests to Council: !) asked Council to pay close auention to the plans for <br />Jefferson Park Avenue to insure that. there are plans for bike lanes; and 2) asked Council to <br />instruct staffto inco¢orate bike lanes on West. Main Street wlaJ!e the bridge is under <br />construction <br /> <br />Mr. Toscano noted ~hat the City has set aside $20._000 a year for bike lanes. <br /> <br /> Mr. Satyendra Hui..a, Director of Community Development, said that the West Main <br />Street Bridge includes bike lanes. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she t~els it is time to look at the long-term needs along West <br />Main Street, including bike lanes, parking, and bus stops, and to explore how- bike lanes <br />could be configured. Ms. Slaughter recommended that Planning staff be directed to take a <br />look at the issues~ <br /> <br /> Ms, Daugherty expressed agreement with Ms. Slaughter, and suggested that using extra <br />wide sidewalks as previously mentioned by Ms. Slaughter be ex'zp, lored for bike use~ <br /> <br /> Ms. 51aaglXer recommended that alternatives be explored in conjunction with the <br />ISTEA grant for bike lanes. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano stressed that any development of such bike lanes has to include West <br />Main Street merchants and their interests. Mr. Toscano asked that Pia_n_nfng staffbring <br />Council up to date on what is happening now, and what will be happening in the next six <br />months. Nk. Toscano asked that staff put together a time line for options for Council to <br />consider. <br /> <br />Rev. Edwards stat. ed that he shares the concern about involving the merchants in the <br /> <br />process. <br /> <br /> <br />
