112 <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she was concerned with <br />long-term future revenue sources for the schools and would <br />like to see a shift to more funding from the state and <br />favored reducing the City's apprOpriation to the schOols in <br />the proposed budget. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano expressed agreement with Ms. Slaughter, and <br />stressed that raising questions about the funding should not <br />be seen as an attack or defunding of the schools. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that she felt the long-term question <br />is how much money does the City want to put into schools, and <br />noted that the state funding would probably have been at the <br />same level as now expected had it not been reduced in the <br />previous year. Ms. Waters stated that she did not favor <br />reducing the appropriation to the schools. <br /> <br /> Rev. Edwards and Mr. Vandever stated that they did not <br />favor reducing the funding for the schools. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano stated that he would like to discuss how <br />best to market the city schools in the future. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that she understood that there <br />were approximately 1,900 students in kindergarten and <br />first grades in the city which might be involved the Sexual <br />Assault Resource Agency's CAP program, but in order to be <br />affordable needed to be done in conjunction with Albemarle <br />County. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter recommended that Council consider setting <br />some funds aside for future consolidation efforts with <br />Albemarle County. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that information provided after a <br />previous work session revealed that the city is not <br />precluded from adopting a local cigarette tax and recommended <br />that the Council discuss the matter prior to the next session <br />of the General Assembly. <br /> <br />~ m~s adjourned. <br /> <br />President <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Friday, <br />April 3, 1992 AT 12:30 p.m. IN THE Basement Conference Room. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon with Albemarle County Board of Supervisors <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (signgd) <br /> <br />BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM - April 3, 1992 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the <br />Albemarle County Board of Supervisors for an informal <br />luncheon with the following members present: Rev.
