Edwards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. <br />Toscano, Ms. Waters. Absent: Mr. Vandever. <br /> <br /> Mr. Rauzelle Smith, Chairman of the School Board, asked <br />Dro McGeehan to prepare a handout so the Board could see the <br />current budget process and he asked the. Board for changes <br />and/or recommendations. <br /> <br /> Mr. Bill Atwood, School Board Member, stated that public <br />schools are not parent friendly and suggested that a large <br />group of the community could get together in the form of a <br />school town meeting to discuss their concerns and to solicit <br />input from parents as a first step in the school's budget <br />process. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter suggested that since the School Board has <br />its annual retreat in the fall a school town meeting in <br />September may be a beginning in starting the budget process. <br /> <br /> Mr. Pezzoli stated that in years past the School Board <br />had explicitly sought input from the public but the public <br />hearings became too official and the public was reluctant to <br />give any input. They found that in order to generate input <br />the issue had to be in the proposal stage of development so <br />that they could actually see what they were working with. <br /> <br /> Mr. Smith stated that a survey was being circulated and <br />that the data received could be included in the budget <br />process. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter stated that the survey may be a basis for <br />discussion of issues prior to the retreat. Ms. Slaughter <br />also stated that radio call-ins provided a quicker vehicle <br />for input. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano stated that the issue of soliciting public <br />input could be done by 1) something similar to City Notes, <br />and 2) under the new cable franchise a new channel will be <br />reserved for the educational process. <br /> <br /> <br />
